"So, why did you seek me out?" she asked.

"Curiosity. I've heard muchabout you."

"Are you trying to hurt my uncle?" Vanessa had a worried expression on her face.

"I'd like to forget about the whole thing. Ethan, on the other hand, despises any mention of betrayal. He is unable to let it go. Treachery is the absoluteworst sin to him, and he will not stop. I tried talking to him, but you know how harsh he can be. That's why he keeps making new enemies and bringing old ones together."

"What exactly do you mean?"

"Take a look," hesaid quietly, pointing to two men in the corner of the room.

"That's Sean Mullen, and on his right is Andrey Robinson. You may not recognize them, but they are the leaders of two separate Mafias with one common enemy: Ethan."

Anna had told me everything about her parents and the Robinsons, so I knew he wasn't lying. Luke was revealing information to me that I was previously unaware of. I knew Ethan was rash and went after what he wanted, but I had no idea how quickly he made enemies.

The men walked away from the table to the side of the room. They weren't too far away from where I was sitting. I could run over to them and introduce myself much more quickly than anyone could stop me. Luke was the one who was closest to me, and he didn't seem to care. It would be the ideal way for me to get away.

"I suppose you haven'tseenyour uncle for a while now?" Luke asked.

I nodded respectfully. They were my only family, and while I enjoyed being with Ethan when he wasn't a Mafia lord, I still missed them.

"I'll be heading to my table over there," Luke said, looking at me with pity and motioning his head to a table not far from ours. "Please give Ethan my greetings if you see him before I do." He turned to leave but returned just as quickly. "I'm not sure how close you two are, but if you ever have the opportunity to influence any of his decisions, please advise him to take the less harsh path," he said, smiling.

"I want you to know," I said, stopping him in his tracks, "I will find out the whole truth."

He said nothing but smiled and walked away.

Sean Mullen and Andrey Robinson sat beside their dates. I knew it would only take a few steps to get to their table. There was also an open seat, and I knew I'd be able to introduce myself quickly. They'd keep me safe from Ethan, and I'd finally be able to see Uncle Fred.

I looked around as I watched the men murmur amongst themselves. Ethan was nowhere to be found, so I made my decision.
