“But you didn’t see him much?”

She shook her head. “Not very often. He’d visit me in the winter, take me to whatever games were nearby. Then in June, when our lilacs bloomed.”

“What?”

“He always loved the lilacs on our property. Every summer, he’d bring me a new one,” she said, resting her chin on top of her hand, gazing at me.

A twice a year dad. Wow. And I thought my dad was shitty.

“That sounds really nice. Why lilacs?” I asked while I played with her hair, letting it fall between my fingers.

She gave me a heartbreaking smile. “Who knows why Dad did what he did? He liked lilacs. I don’t think there was any particular reason behind it. What about your dad? You don’t talk about him much.”

There was a reason for that. Nothing she needed to hear about right now, though. “He traveled a lot when I was a kid. Didn’t see him much. Still don’t. His work was always more important than any of us.”

“You’re kidding? He helps create the world’s best hockey forward and he doesn’t have time for you?” Gigi said, screwing her face up in the most adorable way.

I shrugged, hoping she’d drop the topic. “World’s best hockey forward?” I said, rolling her onto her back.

“You don’t like that?” She giggled.

“No. How about, ‘World’s best lover’?”

She let out a sexy as fuck giggle. “That, too.”

Then I crushed my mouth down onto hers.

Then I set about proving myself worthy of my new title.
