Beau’s eyebrows shot up and stayed there. It matched his open mouth and stunned expression. “I’ll be right back. Don’t move.”

Yeah, where exactly did he think I was going to move to? The cameras were outside. I wanted to show the world my cried up face even less than I’d wanted to show it to Beau.

I stuffed in another piece of chocolate and cringed. It was terrible.

Before I knew it, Beau was back with a familiar grocery bag from a Canadian chain that didn’t exist here. He took off his blazer and threw it over a stool. “Here, have at it. I’m surprised you didn’t bring any Coffee Crisp with you.”

I dug through the bag. Suddenly, the heavens opened up. I’d struck gold. “Oh my gosh,” I said, holding up a double pack of Coffee Crisp. The light danced off it as I twisted it around in my hand.

Beau reached into the bag and pulled out a bag of chips with a ketchup bottle on the front. “Oh my gosh,” I said, smiling at the foreign wares. He opened the bag, and I listened with joy to the familiar crinkling sound.

Reaching into the bag, I grabbed a huge chip, the unmistakeable, indelible red flavoring all over it. Then I crunched into it.

Delicious.

“Good?” Beau asked, sitting on the edge of the coffee table.

I nodded and said, “Thanks, you can go now. I promise not to eat the entire bag of candy. I think.”

He stood, and my stomach lurched and twisted in discomfort. Even though I’d said it was okay for him to leave—it wasn’t. Every part of me wanted him to stay here with me.

“Move forward,” he said, lightly pushing my shoulders. I gazed at him in question, not understanding what he meant. Beau exhaled, then put his arms under my legs and behind my back and physically moved me down the couch.

Then he sat behind me. “What are you doing?” I asked, feeling my body stiffen.

“Relax, G. I’m staying home to watch shitty movies with you and eat great fuckin’ candy,” he said, still moving his body behind me—like he was trying to get comfortable.

“It’s fine, really. You can go out,” I said, holding my body forward, away from him.

He got out his phone and started texting. “I said I’m staying home. Now start from the beginning. What do you mean the team’s not playing well?”

A knock sounded at the door, then the handle jiggled. “Beau, move it, man. The guys are waiting,” Trey said as he stepped into the doorway.

“I just texted everyone. I’m not going tonight.”

“Saw that. What happened in the last—” Trey said, then stopped as he rounded the couch and took us in. “Jesus, honey, what’s going on? Are you okay?” Trey asked, bending down to sit by my legs.

“Just a bad day, that’s all. I told him to go with you, I’m perfectly fine now,” I said, unwrapping a Coffee Crisp.

“Yeah, I can see that,” he said dryly as he eyed my candy bar. “Son-of-a-bitch, man, I asked if you’d brought any of those with you. You lied to me,” Trey said, staring down my chocolate wonderfulness.

“Didn’t bring it for you,” Beau said, pulling my shoulders back so I had no choice but to rest against him. Damn, that felt too good. The heat from his body radiated through his shirt and into my body.

“G, you want me to beat up anyone for you, all you gotta do is call,” Trey said, ignoring Beau’s comment.

“I want you to not beat anyone up tonight. Can you do that for me?” I asked, crunching and savoring each bite.

He bounced his shoulders up and down. “Not sure about that one, honey. Kiss my puppies for me when they wake up.” Trey rose and squeezed my leg with his large hand.

“Look after my friend, man. She’s pretty special to me,” he called back before shutting the door.

After he was gone, Beau started up with the questions again. “The team’s not playing well?”

“I don’t know if it’s nerves or what. A lot of us have played together already. We should be playing better than this.”

Beau nodded and clutched my hand with his. Then he guided the chocolate bar to his mouth and took a bite. “Hey,” I said, stealing it back from him, pretending to be offended when really that move had turned me on. Gosh, I was so messed up.

“Keep going, you don’t know what Niki should do after hockey? What’s that mean?” he asked as he chewed in my ear, which I didn’t mind one bit.
