Lola sticking up for me had not been part of tonight’s plan.

Marco attempted to recover from his co-host’s unwelcome opinion. “Well, that’s the life these guys lead.”

Lola stood firm. “I don’t think all guys in this league behave that way, Marco. I completely disagree. You’re making a huge generalization here about how every man in this sport conducts themself. It’s simply not true.”

She stepped forward a little more. “And we don’t know what led to Lexi’s decision. But I find it hard to believe that someone like her would make such a serious decision if there weren’t extenuating circumstances.”

Now, Marco stepped forward. “Well, Lola,” he dropped his gaze down to her, “we do have cameras to see into their lives—”

Lola cut him off before he could continue. “There are cameras, that’s correct. But we don’t show people everything that happens. The way that the last montage was skewed toward Trey’s advantage—well, it’s just not right. Neither is the fact that Lexi played like a champ out there last night, and saved her team’s asses. And all she gets for that is a one sentence mention. Five goals, Marco! That woman is an incredible athlete, and all we’re talking about is—”

Suddenly, the screen went black.

Then it went right to a commercial.

The room was quiet.

I looked over at Jillian and she raised her eyebrows and bounced her shoulders a few times.

Hmm.

Maybe they were having technical difficulties.

Gigi peered over at me, but I couldn’t tell what she was thinking.

She probably thought I was mad at her.

And I totally wasn’t.

I was disappointed.

Which in my world was so, so, so much worse.

If I did something to someone or messed up in some way—at least I could apologize for being an inconsiderate dick.

You couldn’t make someone respect you.

We must’ve watched ten commercials before an announcement came over the TV.

“We now welcome you to a previously broadcast show…”

Niki gasped, “Oh, boy.” Her eyes were as round as her mouth.

“What the heck just happened?” Gigi asked while she stood up from the floor.

“Well, it looks to me like Miss Lola Lopez is going to be looking for a new job in about five minutes.”

Technically, we weren’t allowed to leave Jillian’s apartment until the show was over.

Nobody really knew what to do, so Gigi said we should sit tight until she messaged some people from the show.

It couldn’t have been ten minutes later, and we all heard a loud, piercing yell from the courtyard.

We rushed to the window and saw—Lola yelling at—Trey.

“Oh, boy,” Niki said before she turned to me.

“Exactly,” I said, then went back to spying on the two down by the pool.
