To keep the conversation going, but to keep it light, I say, “Thank you for the food and the shower.”

“Anytime.”

I can’t help the smile that finds my lips. “You’re not a man of many words, are you?”

“No,” he says, getting up from the table. “You can sleep in the bed; I’ll sleep on the floor.”

I jump up and walk toward him. “Cash, you’ve done more than I deserve. I can’t take the bed and let you sleep on the floor like a dog.”

He fights back a smile, and it causes a sense of pride in me. If I can get him to laugh, I’ll feel like I can do anything.

“Leslie, I will not allow you to sleep on the floor like a dog.” He raises an eyebrow, like he’s waiting for my come back.

I nod as I look from the bed to him. “We’ll share the bed.”

“Fuck no,” he rushes out.

I smile as I cross my arms. “Why not?”

He doesn’t say anything, just stares at me. I lift my shoulders as I pull the comforter down, climbing into bed. The softness of the mattress has me let out a soft moan.

“Nope,” he says, grabbing for the pillow.

I can’t help the laugh that escapes me as I look at him. This huge, tattooed guy that shows no emotions at all, can’t handle a moan. “Cash, please don’t sleep on the floor.”

“I’ll just get my own room. You can stay here tonight,” he says, turning away.

“No!” I yell, moving quickly to the end of the bed. Fear grips me, trying it’s best to strangle me as my eyes fill with tears. “Please, don’t leave.”

He sighs as he steps next to the bed, kicking his sneakers off. When he sits down, my pulse slows, and I move back to my side of the bed. He stays on top of the comforter and as much as I want to argue because I’m so grateful for everything he’s done, I don’t. The fear of being alone is much worse than having this big guy lying next to me.

The silence is something I’ve become used to, but right now it is a little too much. My thoughts race more than usual and I’m feeling myself getting emotional. Tonight, should’ve ended a hell of a lot different and I have absolutely no doubt that if it wasn’t Hayden Cash, I’d be dead. He’s giving me another chance at life. I will not fuck it up again.

I quickly wipe my tears before I turn my head to face him. I can’t breathe and this time it has nothing to do with fear. It has to do with those intense, bright blue eyes staring back at me.

“Thank you,” I whisper.

“Get some sleep, Leslie.” He rolls over and I smile.

Thanks to you, big fella, I will.

The bright light shining through the window has me snap my eyes open. I jump up confused as I take in my surroundings.

“Leslie, you’re alright,” Cash says, sipping on what I assume is coffee. He’s sitting at the little table with breakfast all over the table. “I wasn’t sure what you liked for breakfast, so I ordered a bunch of different things. I also ordered you a coffee and a tea because I wasn’t sure which you liked.”

It takes a second for me to remember that for right now I’m safe. I adjust the t-shirt I’m wearing, which is entirely too large. Slipping out of bed, I pad over to the table craving a cup of coffee.

When I sit down, I grab the coffee and add some cream to it. It’s been so long since I had cream in my coffee that I close my eyes and savor the taste.

“This coffee is like heaven,” I say, opening my eyes. I smile as I take another sip. “I like coffee. I’m not a picky eater, I’ll pretty much try anything. I’m not a morning person. I like lying in bed as long as possible. I love running in the evenings. I’m a hair stylist. I like romantic movies and I won’t watch anything scary. I’m a dog person. I’m an only child. I love being around friends and having a good time.”

He studies me and listens to every word I say. He puts his coffee down and nods. “I didn’t ask.”

I lift my shoulders as I bite into a piece of bacon. “You don’t ask anything.”

“It’s not my business.”

I smile as I finish my piece of bacon. “Getting to know someone isn’t your business?”
