He shakes his head, popping a grape into his mouth. “You forgot to add you like to talk.”

I toss my head back laughing at his comment. “I am a big talker. Especially, when I’m trying to get to know someone,” I say, smiling at him.

He grabs the back of his neck and sighs. “Three questions.”

I sit up straighter and fold my hands on the table. “Where are you from? Do you have any siblings? What’s your favorite thing to do?”

“I’m from Florida, but I live in California now. I have a brother and working out is my favorite thing to do.”

He leans back in the chair and raises an eyebrow. I laugh lightly, tucking my hair behind my ears. “That all surprises me.”

“Really?” he asks.

“Yep. I pegged you for living in New York. I figured you had a sister and if I’m being honest, I thought you’d say sex is your favorite thing to do,” I say, shrugging.

An exceedingly small, almost not noticeable, smile hits his lips. “You have no goddamn filter, do you?”

“Why because I said sex? Please, look at you. Don’t act like you are some prude.”

Maybe I’m crossing a line here, but he makes me feel comfortable. I want to get him talking to me, so it isn’t so one sided. I can’t figure out if he’s always this reserved or if it’s just because I’m a complete stranger he was hired to kill.

“Look at me?” he asks, raising an eyebrow.

I laugh, taking a bite of a pancake. “Don’t act like you don’t know how you look.”

“Intimidating?”

“Well yeah, you are intimidating as hell, but hot as hell, too,” I say, feeling myself blush.

I’m not shy but saying it to him makes me feel a little embarrassed. I’ve never been around someone that looked like him. I shouldn’t look at that beard and want to know what it would feel like against me, but I can’t help it.

“We’re gonna need to get you out of town today. We can’t risk staying here any longer,” he says, changing the subject.

Reality crashes down on me and everything I was just feeling vanishes. I pinch my hand as I look out the window behind him. “They’ll be looking for me. If I get on a bus or train, even a plane they’ll be waiting.”

“I realize that. You’ll be coming to California and staying with me.”

He stands up and goes into the bathroom, closing the door. I hear the shower turn on and I sit there stunned.

“I’ll be going to stay with him?” I whisper, to myself.

I slide my sunglasses on as we drive out of town. Leslie panicked a little when we walked out of the hotel, even though I pulled my black Denali SUV right up to the door. She was shaking and demanded to lay in the back seat.

This girl needs my protection. She needs to know that she’s safe and I can’t assur

e that until I figure out what the hell, I’m going to do about it all. Rogue is going to be pissed that he lost money. Plus, the Dalo and Greco families will want her blood. I can’t let her out of my sight until I know she’ll be safe.

I look in the rearview mirror and see her still laying in the backseat. “Leslie, we’re out of town. Come sit up front.”

“I can’t,” she whispers.

Fuck. This girl has been living in fear for so long, that she has no idea how to live anymore. The overwhelming urge to help her gets stronger and stronger. She’s not only beautiful, but there’s just something about her I can’t quite put my finger on. It makes me want to keep talking to her. Which I never do. I actually don’t mind being around her. Last night, she panicked when I said I was going to get another room, and that made a small dent in the walls I have around myself. She needed me and it felt good.
