“Fiction?” I raised a brow, turning the book over in my hands.

“Yep. I think it’s the only fictional book Genevieve DuWant ever wrote.”

The snap of wood popping in the hearth filled my ears, muffling any other sound in the room. This book was written by the same author as the other book I’d been drawn to. Obviously, there was something there I had missed.

“Milly… are you okay?” Keelyn stood, placing a hand on my shoulder and guiding me back down into my chair. “You look like you got dizzy all of a sudden.”

“Yes. Sorry. I’m fine.” I laid the book back on the table and swallowed a few gulps of water.

My mind raced over the details I remembered from the other book, snagging on one in particular.

While I cannot prove what I say is true, I can document my experiences and share them here as a warning—

Opening the book, I flipped it from front to back, inspecting the jacket cover and reading the author’s note printed on the inside sleeve.

While the words I share here are true, this book has been published as fiction so that I may maintain the secrecy of my source. For if I were to disclose their existence, the world would never be the same.

My world shifted.

“Milly, what is it?” Keelyn’s voice snapped me back to the table.

“Um…” I blinked. “It says here that while this book is fiction, the contents are true. I guess I just don’t understand how that’s accurate or possible.” I shook my head and set the book down.

“Hmm, that’s interesting. I’ve only ever seen one other book like that before. It was so the author could protect her sources.”

“That’s what this one says too, but what does it mean?” I slurped another bite from my spoon, my soup now bordering on cold.

“As you know, in nonfiction books, the bibliography is where the author has to list all of her sources and document any research material used for the book. But… if the author is unwilling to share that information, they can choose to publish their work as fiction instead.” She shrugged. “Then it’s up to the reader to decide whether they believe them or not.”

“Wow. I’ve never heard of that,” I admitted. “What was the other book?”

“The Expected One by Kathleen McGowan. It was a religious text… and an amazing story.”

“I’ll have to check it out.” My eyes drifted to the book in front of me, knowing I wouldn’t be reading anything else.
