Emerging from the tree line, I spotted her car in its usual spot and ran up the stairs.

“Milly! What are you doing here so early? And on a Saturday no less.”

“Hi, Keelyn. I have some important research I’ll need a computer for, but also, I wanted to pay for this.” I pulled the book out of my bag, keeping it pressed against my chest.

“I don’t think it’s overdue yet.” She clicked at the keys of her computer, her brows creasing as she focused on the screen.

“No. It’s not. But what I’m saying is… I need to buy this book.”

Keelyn cocked her head, her quirky smile barely hiding what she thought of my odd request. “Are you sure you wouldn’t rather just order a copy of your own?”

“I’m sure. I need to keep this one.” Honestly, I wasn’t sure why it was so important for me to keep this particular copy, but a nagging tug in my gut told me she wouldn’t be able to replace it when she tried.

“Okay.” She shrugged. “That’ll be $37.50.”

“For this tiny thing?” I scoffed, ready to pay whatever it took.

“Yes, ma’am. It’s our only copy and apparently very valuable.” She winked.

“No problem. Here you go.” I handed over two twenties. “Keep the change.” I laughed. “I’ve always wanted to say that.”

Keelyn snickered and punched a few more keys. “All right, you’re all set on computer three.”

I looked to the bank of old-school computers lining the far wall. “Actually, can I have number five instead?”

Shaking her head, Keelyn smiled and honored my request. “Of course. Good luck with your research, Milly, and let me know if you need anything else.”

I dipped my head. “Thank you. I will.”

Tucked into the farthest corner on the first floor, I laid out my notepad, pen, and my personal copy of TheQueen of Nightmares and poured myself another cup of tea. I needed to stay alert if I was going to get anywhere with this today.

I typed in Genevieve DuWant and immediately got a list of all her available books. They ranged from dreamology to psychic powers to Building a Bridge within Your Mind’s Eye. But Keelyn was right. The Queen of Nightmares was the only fiction book she’d ever written, but to me, it contained the most truth of all.
