Wiping my cheeks, I peered around the pedestal, looking back to see how close she was. I froze, meeting her sickly eyes as she stood just outside the door.

A sinister laugh filled the cavern, and a vicious smile spread across her face as Roarke appeared beside her.

I gasped. He was just as beautiful as I remembered but seemed… smaller somehow. Drained of power and sadder than I’d ever seen him before. He looked up, processing the scene, his dull eyes going wide when they finally landed on me.

He recoiled from Isabelle, but she caught his arm, violently shocking him and holding him in place.

“Let go of me!” he screamed.

Isabelle’s taunting laughter filled the night sky. “Look at her…” She flung an arm in my direction. “She’s burning up in there. I told you she didn’t belong here. She was never worthy of your magic.”

Roarke struggled against her, his body contorting in pain and still unable to break free.

A fury I’d never felt before rose inside me, scorching me from the inside out. Seeing her hands upon him—his depressed and weakened state—something fractured in me, and a voice filled my head.

“Her magic has tainted the source, breaking our vessel, but you are still true. Accept our gift and bring balance once more.”

Tears rolled down my cheeks as the combined voices of Mamu and Zaqu filled my head. Roarke was their broken vessel, and I was the only one who could save him.

Flooded with courage and blessed by the gods, I reached for him, my outstretched hand shimmered with cosmic dust, bubbling and rippling with power. I looked to my other, confirming the shard was still in my grasp, then shouted to the heavens.

Take my magic and combine it with thee. His rightful queen I am meant to be. Balanced as equals from dark to light. Grant us a new role but allow us a life. Broken is the curse my ancestor made. Forgiven and mended on this day. Take my magic and combine it with thee. This is my wish, so mote it be.

The sky erupted above me, flooding the gate with even more power. Lifted off my feet and into the air, I kept my eyes pinned to Roarke’s, smiling as they started to glow.

“No!” Isabelle’s panicked scream rent the air as pure cosmic light exploded from him, clearing the clouds and disintegrating her essence from the spot upon which she stood. Figments of her body floated into the sky, burned away to ash as he extinguished her tainted presence from this sacred place.

The moment my feet touched the ground, I ran to Roarke.

It was over.

Crashing into him, I buried my head against his chest, his strong arms encircling me and holding me tight. Welcoming me home.

“Milly.” My name fell from his lips, whisper-soft and full of longing.

I looked up into his familiar sparkling eyes and gasped—my own reflected back at me, an entire universe held within.
