I slide up on the stool next to me, meeting his nearly-black eyes again. “I know who you are, Viktor.”

He grins, pleased to hear so. “And yet, I know nothing of you, princess.”

I’m sure that’s a lie. He knows my name, we can start there. And am I to pretend I didn’t just hear him call me that?

I’m positive my uncle has already told him everything he needs to know, includingwhoI am and where I come from. But I’m beginning to blush at the thought of him knowing what’s led me here.

“I’m Tessa,” I simper.

“Tessa,” he repeats, voice calm anddeep. “That, I do know.” His grin widens, and I feel the tension start to lift from my shoulders—even though I was telling the truth before when I said I know just who he is. “I want you to feel comfortable in your time here.”

Comfortable?

I about laugh, as all of this is way, wayyyyout of my comfort zone.Maybe my uncle didn’t bring him up to speed after all...

“Thank you,” I murmur, playing nice as I fidget in my seat. Why am I this nervous?

“The bedroom Tomas showed you to—is it to your liking?”

“Most definitely,” I answer. Why would he ever think it wasn’t? Everything in this place is more than I ever expected, as when I finally dialed that number in my phone, I never thought I’d end uphere.

One of the dogs comes up to my side, the first one to join me tonight. He sniffs my leg and I grab a piece of fruit from out of my bowl again, offering it to him. I can’t stop smiling as he takes it happily, wagging his tail.

“Are there…other people here?” I ask Viktor, feeling my courage closing up under his stare.

His face shifts as that dim smile of his disappears, bringing the man to look rather serious all of a sudden.

Now, I can see the crime boss in him…the dark shadows in the room deepening the gentle lines on his rugged face. He must be close to my uncle in age, and his features are like stone—emotionless, yet perfect. I’m already wishing I could make him smile again...I think I like him better that way.

“There are,” he confirms just what I suspected. “Though, not many. As you can tell, you’re protected here, Tessa. But the guards stay out of your way, don’t worry.”

I gulp, feeling worried and relieved at the same time to know there are unseen men lurking around…even in the house.

But Viktor straightens up, and I’m reminded once again of how big and strong he is. “You should take Morana with you to bed.” His eyes slide to the dog at my hip. I now notice she’s a female, and she seems rather attached to me already.Would you look at that?

Though, I’m betting the fruit has a lot to do with it.

“Morana?” I say, squinting. If I’m not mistaken, I remember hearing the name once before in a history class.

Viktor gives me that half-smile again, causing my heart to stutter. “As you can see, she’s obviously more the god of fruit than death, right?”

I giggle, sweeping my eyes right back to the cold nose grazing my leg.Morana, aren’t you so lovable?

When I look back to Viktor, I catch him disappearing the same way he came from, his hulking form disintegrating into the darkness.

I quickly let out a breath I hadn’t realized I was holding. Two of the dogs follow behind his footsteps, but Morana stays right by me.

“Let’s go to bed, girl,” I whisper.

Slipping off the stool, I grab the small wheel of cheese still untouched, thinking this should be a good enough snack for the night. And if not, at least I have Morana to accompany me back down here.

Feeling content, I head for the stairs as my mind wanders, thinking of where Viktor’s room is even at…

But I’m being ridiculous. The man is older, and did I mentiondangerous?

I shouldn’t be thinking of him at all.

But the truth is, by the way Viktor looks at me, I know hewantsme. And if he so much as tried to make a move, pushing the limits…I’d give it up to him in the end.
