Page 97 of Not Kissing Nick

Sixty-Three

This was different than the last wedding they’d gone to, he thought. Noah saw the dopey grin on Phil’s face and how red Glenna’s got. He didn’t understand it, not really.

It was all that boy-girl stuff.

He didn’t understand why people made such a big deal out of weddings. Although the cake was pretty good.

Patton sat down next to him, with his own plate of cake. Then it was Parker and the dork twins.

“So Evey is like your real sister now?” Philip asked around a mouthful of cake. It fell out. The doofus smeared it, right over the suit he was wearing. Eww. He ate like a wolverine, sometimes.

“Yeah. They’re our real sisters now,” Patton said. “Why?”

“So just because your dad married Aunt Glenna, you have to be their brother?” Wesley asked. “That sucks.”

“Why does it suck?” Noah asked. Becky ran by, chasing Elly. Robin was right behind them, trying to catch them in that silly dress she was wearing. Robin was laughing again. He liked it when she laughed.

“Because little sisters suck,” Philip said, like Noah was stupid or something.

“No. They don’t. Especially when something bad happens.” Noah would never forget how that week without Nova had felt. “They are just different. Little.”

“Then you be Becky’s brother, then,” Philip said.

“He probably will be eventually,” Parker said, his own cake everywhere.

“What do you mean?” Wesley asked.

“I heard Dad and Glenna talking. Dad says it’s just a matter of time until Uncle Nick marries your mom.”

Nick and Robin getting married?

“Nuh-uh,” Philip said. “Mom can’t get married. She’s a mom.”

Patton laughed. “So’s Glenna, dude. Yet here we are.”

The twins just looked at him like he was crazy.

Noah didn’t think it sounded crazy at all. “What would be so bad about that? I mean…Nick would be your dad, too.”

“And our mom would be your mom. And Nova’s.” Philip said, like it wasn’t obvious or something. “And we’d all have to live together somewhere, too.”

“We’re moving into the house behind Uncle Phil’s,” Noah said, the name just slipping out. “It’s really big. We went there before.”

“Yeah, we’ve been there,” Parker said. “You can get there in five minutes if you go up this deer trail and through the stream. We could hang out all the time!”

Noah thought about it as he ate. Having brothers and another sister. He could do it, he thought. The twins were dorks, but…he could tolerate them. And Becky. She needed a good older brother to keep an eye on her. Especially since she was just stuck with the dorks, who could barely take care of themselves.

But it would mean Robin. And…a new mom. He wasn’t sure he was ready for that, at all. He looked for Robin, just for a minute.

She was right there, talking to a tall guy in a suit. She looked a little irritated. Nova was right next to her, holding a piece of cake. There was a look on Nova’s face…

Noah knew what was going to happen.

There was no way he could get there in time to stop it.
