I tiptoe downstairs, carrying my shoes in one hand and my bag of weapons in the other.

"Where are you headed?" Callan’s voice sounding through the darkness makes me jump, clutching my beating chest.

"Fuck. You scared me."

He steps into the pool of moonlight shining through the window. “Sorry. I couldn't sleep, so I came down here for some water."

"Oh. So you aren't here to stop me?"

He frowns, cocking his head to the side. “I don't know where you're going, so why would I stop you?"

"I'm meeting Trix. She's found a lead on Rose, and wants me to come check it out."

"You didn't want to tell the police?" Callan asks.

I shake my head. “No. It might be nothing. I don't even know what it is."

"Do you want company?"

I shoot him a suspicious glance. “You aren't going to insist?"

He leans his hip against the counter, crossing his arms. “No. You've a fully grown woman who has shown over and over again you can handle yourself. I'd like to help you, but it's your choice."

Why do these fucking men insist on being everything I could ever want? It makes things really difficult. I don't have time to kiss him silly like I did Oliver.

I'm a scholar and while I've trained some in self-defense, I'm no true fighter. I pride myself on my brains, and being stubborn and insisting on foolish independence would not be smart. Nor will it help Rose.

"Please come."

He straightens with a relieved smile. “Thank you."

"Are the others going to be pissed? Should we get them too?" I ask.

"Let's find out if it's something worth waking them up for."

"Okay."

The town is quiet and so are we as we make our way through the moonlit streets. It would be romantic under normal circumstances, wandering beneath starlight with a handsome man, but I can't enjoy it until Rose is back and safe.

The front entrance of the omega housing is unlocked, which makes me frown. I should've needed my key this late at night. Callan and I exchange concerned glances as we enter. The sounds of weeping echo down the stairs, which makes me race ahead, pepper spray in hand, Callan right on my heels.

Only to find Trix hovering over a sobbing omega who has a massive bruise on her face. Other omegas peek from their doors, watching with solemn expressions.

"What the fuck is going on?" I fight the instinct to put myself between the cowering omega and the furious beta.

"This traitorous omega helped the fucker take Rose." Trix scowls at the girl.

My eyes widen. “What?"

Trix shakes her head in disgust. ”She was apparently at the library and got Rose away from us. Right into that asshole's arms."

"Did you do that to her face?" I ask.

Trix scoffs. “Of course not. She was like that when I found her. It made me suspicious."

I squat next to her, trying to smile reassuringly. “Can you tell me what happened? He hurt you?"

"Yes. He did this when I refused at first. He... he said you're a bad influence, and he has to get Rose away from you before she's ruined as an omega." She spears me with a tear-filled hateful gaze. "This is your fault. If you would just keep your fucking head down, you wouldn't piss the alphas off which then screws over the rest of us."
