I GET THE BEST NAP of my life that morning, curled up with my new pack, at peace in a way I've never experienced before.

Too bad we're not left alone long enough for it to last longer.

The knocking and doorbell ringing start only a couple hours after we finally calm down enough to fall asleep, the sun bright and beaming through the windows, banishing the fears.

I slump in the barstool, clutching a steaming cup of coffee, leaning against Callan as the police update us.

"The alpha who invaded your home and kidnapped Rose is out of surgery, and will make a full recovery." Detective Johnson taps his pen against the island.

Damn, that's a shame.

The detective continues, “He will then be charged with kidnapping, assault, stalking, breaking and entering, trespassing, and whatever else we can come up with to throw at him."

"What about the other alpha that cornered Aurora in the library? And her mother?" Grey asks.

The detective nods. “They're both being charged with blackmail, attempted assault, and a few other things. The alpha had a lot to say about your mother, so we're going to make sure they pay for what they did. Alphas typically get out of charges like this, but since they happened here in our town, they should stick a little better. None of them will go to jail forever, but you should have some time to breathe before you have to worry about any of them again. The mayor is also planning to ban them from the town."

His words reassure me and I sink further against Callan.

Grey stands and smiles at the detective. ”Good. Thank you for coming to update us."

Johnson nods. “Of course. We're also working with the hometown cops from both places to see if they want to add any charges to try to get them more jail time."

I snort. “Good luck with that. The cops in my town...they do whatever my mother wants. Or any other alpha in high positions of authority."

Johnson winces. ”Yeah, we've seen some of that."

"What about my father? Is he okay?" I ask.

The detective hesitates. “He's... he ended up needing to go to the hospital too."

I sit up straight, stiff and alarmed. “What?"

Johnson sighs. “He didn't want us to tell you. He's out now, back at the hotel."

"I need to go." I scramble from my seat.

Grey nods. “Of course. Let's go. Officers, thank you. Let us know if you need anything else from us."

I don't have time for pleasantries.

My pack stays right with me as I race from the house.

"We'll take the car, it'll be faster,” Enzo says. “The hotel isn't that close."

I veer to the left towards the garage in the back, panic tightening my throat. What the hell did she do to him? Tears burn like acid in my throat as I fight to keep my emotions under control. Dad is incredibly empathetic, and other people's emotions wear hard on him. He doesn't need my guilt and rage and pain. He has enough of his own.

In the car, Grey and Oliver anchor me between them, their touches soft and comforting as Enzo drives like a maniac to the other side of town, away from the charm and closer to the big box stores trying to creep their way onto this historic place.

Thankfully, Callan has called ahead to find out Dad's room number, because I don't have a single clue. When we reach the chain hotel, my pack surrounds me, showing their silent support as we move as a rather awkward group through the lobby and into the elevator.

Oliver rubs my back. ”We're here. Whatever you need, love.”

I smile at him and then smile at all the others. “I know. Thank you. I adore all of you."

We may not be at the "L" word yet, but I have a feeling it's only a matter of time.
