I wince. “No offense."

Grey scoffs. “Oh no. None taken. Why would it hurt our feelings that you hate enjoying our scent?"

I don’t think he’s actually offended, but I rush to explain anyway. "I don't need the complication or the temptation. I'm not looking for a pack. Or an alpha. And you've already got an omega, so there's no need for any of this."

"Any of what?" Oliver frowns.

I gesture at the table. “Bringing me food, checking up on me. Nothing is going to happen here."

"We can't even be friends?" Oliver looks so sad, it makes me a little sick to my stomach.

I sigh. “Sure, but the scent thing is going to make that... challenging."

"So, you'd rather we just left you alone?" Grey asks.

"Isn't that easier for you too?"

If they’re both affected by my scent too, it’s got to be better for them to keep their distance.

"It doesn’t—“

Grey cuts Oliver off. “Yes."

Oliver turns angry eyes onto his alpha. “Grey! Really?"

Grey casts us both apologetic glances. ”She's right. And we shouldn't make things harder on all of us when there's no future."

His words shouldn’t hurt as much as they do when he’s agreeing with me.

I’m just here to get some research done and to fulfill my obligations to the program, then I’ll be moving on in twelve weeks.

It shouldn’t be that hard to avoid this pack for that small amount of time, right?
