Trix and I cheer and whistle and whoop as Robin finishes her speech, tears running down our faces. Right now, in this crowd, it feels like anything is possible. Like maybe this is the start of change in our world. Like maybe there’s hope.

So many came out for this, so many want things to change. They have to listen now.

Until the gunshots rip the hope away from me.

Chapter Sixteen

Aurora

ROBIN AND I END UP tangled on the ground after we both try to tackle each other. But at least we’re down, out of the line of fire. Screams of pain and fear sound all around us. Trix and I are forced to struggle to our feet as the panicked stampede begins, everyone rushing for safety.

“Where did the shots come from?” I ask, searching through the terrified crowd for the glint of a weapon.

“I don’t know, but try to stay low. Head towards where my bike is parked.”

“But, Robin.” I try to fight against the crowd to get to my friend.

Trix shoves me in the opposite direction before grabbing my hand. “She has her betas to help her and has way more security than you. Now move. If we get separated, meet at my bike.”

I nod, my heart fluttering in my heaving chest as I hold tighter to her hand, desperate not to lose her, fear tightening my throat as she drags me through the terrified crowd.

The gunshots have stopped, but it doesn’t matter as we clash with riot police and panicked omegas and snarling alphas.

It’s pure madness out here, smoke thick in the air, making us cough and our eyes burn and water. Rubber bullets fire into the crowd, not distinguishing between sides, uncaring whether hit. Screams and sobs and swearing rip through the air, creating a horrible din that makes my teeth ache. My chest feels tight as I’m boxed in on all sides, the only thing keeping me calm is Trix’s hand in mine, her grip grounding me, reminding me I’m not alone.

Until I’m ripped away from her.

I yelp as a hand wraps around my hair and yanks me backwards, my hand jerking out of Trix’s, an unfamiliar alpha’s snarl in my ears.

“You think you deserve the same rights as us? When you’re weak and pathetic? I’ll show you the only thing an omega’s good for. A knot.”

I growl and rake my fingernails across his face, struggling in his grip, aiming for that knot he’s so proud of. This fucker thinks I’m just going to roll over and take it just because he barks and snarls? No way in hell.

He grunts as I fight, Trix rushing back to help me. I take a backhand to the face, but I barely feel it past the fury pumping through me. I soak his face in pepper spray, screaming in rage as I almost empty it in his eyes. He screams and crumples to the ground, holding his face and we leave him bruised and bleeding on the ground, taken down by a single omega and beta.
