The female still looks like she smells something foul on her upper lip. “We hope to hear good news from you soon, Ms. Miller. Best to settle for whatever alpha who might still be willing you take after this. I don't think you'll find you have many good prospects, so I suggest you aren't picky."

"I'll keep that in mind." I don't remain for more pleasantries or more warnings or veiled threats.

I'm done.

They've said their piece and I'm uninterested in hearing anymore.

I keep my expression blank as I leave, until I almost run right into the alpha mayor of this town.

She grabs my shoulders to steady me and then immediately releases me and steps back. “Whoa. Are you alright?"

I nod, wrapping my arms around my middle. “Yes. Apologies for almost running you over."

The mayor glares behind me before smiling kindly at me. “I understand your hurry. I'm sorry for all of it, I wasn't in a position to deny them entry."

My brow furrows. “Why would you?"

"Because it's bullshit." She laughs at my shocked expression. "I take it you don't realize who my son is and who he chose as pack."

I shake my head. “No, I don't."

Her grin turns a bit wicked and knowing. “You smell like him, so you certainly know him."

My eyes widen. “Oh."

Grey.

She’s Grey’s mother.

Well, this is awkward.

She nods. “Yes. I'm sorry we're meeting under these circumstances."

I frown at her. “I think there's been a miscommunication somehow. I'm not involved with your son or his pack. We've become a bit... friendly, I suppose, but nothing else."

Her smile doesn’t change. “Well, that's too bad. You seem like you'd be good for them. Well, I won't keep you. I'm sure you want to get out of here, but please, come see me if you need help. If you find you can't do what they're demanding of you. I might have an idea to help."

"Thank you." I blink at her.

"You're welcome. Keep that chin up, omega."

"Thank you." I send her a last quizzical glance before hurrying from the building.

I have no idea what the hell she meant, but I guess I can keep her in mind as a last resort. If Grey is still hanging around when I return, I'm going to have a few questions for him. What the hell has he been telling his mother?

My mind swirls with plans as I make my way through town, the streets thankfully pretty empty at the dinner hour, so I don't have to deal with the townsfolk who have almost certainly heard about me and what I've been up to. I'm sure they have opinions they can't wait to share with me.

Things are going to be quite uncomfortable here over the next few weeks while I get things in place for my next steps.

Oliver and Grey and Enzo are all still in my rooms along with Rose when I return. I bite back a groan, knowing they're going to want a complete recap of everything that just happened.

And I just want a nap.
