“Grey was really torn up when he died. Those two were so close. Hell, he was like a father to me too. Most of what I learned about being an omega was from him since my parents are betas who aren't even in a pack."

"Really?" My brows rise.

He nods. “Yeah, so I was raised pretty independently too. You have certainly found kindred spirits with us here."

"I suppose I have."

Something I find I’m rather enjoying.

Oliver clears his throat and straightens, fussing with his clothes. “Speaking of, we'd like to have you over for dinner sometime this week. Are you free?"

"As you can see, I have an extremely busy social calendar." I shoot him a wry smile.

"Does that mean you'll come?"

I shrug. “Sure. Tomorrow night okay? I don't think I'd be very good company tonight. Not until I start hearing back from people."

"That's perfect. Now, come help me run this library. One of my employees called in sick today."

I cast one last glance at my silent computer before I stand. “How is it they let you run this place as young as you are?"

He flashes me a grin. “I told you, our mayor is awesome."

Too bad I can't stay here. Out of all of my travels, this is the first place that felt so welcoming, so much like it could be an actual home. Maybe I'll find that somewhere in Europe too. I've heard there's a town of nothing but bookshops in Scotland. Maybe there.

I'll have to research it.

I let myself forget all my troubles and worries for the time being as I work alongside Oliver. The mindless work of shelving books soothes me, and I find myself in several intense discussions with some of the patrons about different books.

When we have a lull, Oliver grins over at me. "You're a natural at this."

I grin back at him. “It's fun. I love books and reading and knowledge, so it's certainly no hardship to help out around here."

"If you were staying, I'd try to convince you to work here with me and help me run the place."

The idea isn’t terrible. I’m so in love with this particular library, I wouldn’t hate coming in here every day.

"You seem to be doing just fine with it on your own,” I say.

Oliver has done great work here and all his employees seem to love him and have no issue following his orders. And they’re all betas. It’s pretty impressive.

"Doesn't mean it wouldn't be fun if I had you here with me."

My phone buzzes in my pocket, cutting off whatever answer I could have made. His suggestion is tempting, but there's no way. I won't be allowed to stay here without taking an alpha or joining a pack. I pull it out of my pocket and curse, the blood draining from my face at the message.

Oh no.

"What's wrong?" Oliver asks.

"It appears my mother is planning to come here for a visit. She'll be here in three days." I’m going to be sick.

Fuck. That's not enough time to make my escape. There's no way they can get me out of the country that fast.
