I ignore the shiver working its way up my spine and glare at him. “Oh, fuck off."

He laughs. “What? It's true. You don't find intelligence hot?"

I huff, crossing my arms. “Well, obviously."

He smirks. “Was that a double compliment you just paid me?"

I growl. “Nope. That was aimed at your beta."

"Fair enough. He's pretty and smart too. I have excellent taste." Oliver preens.

I shouldn’t find it as charming as I do.

"I can't argue there. Even your alpha isn't completely unattractive.”

His entire face lights up with humor. ”Wow. That's a major concession for you. Especially after the way he acted the other night."

"He told you about that?" I ask, surprised.

Oliver scoffs. “Oh yeah. He was very shamefaced about it too. As he should’ve been."

I wince. “It was mostly bad timing. If I hadn't been so raw, it wouldn't have hit the way it did."

I’m still a little salty over it, but he was so sweet and apologetic afterwards, it went a long way to making up for his asinine alpha bullshit.

Oliver shakes his head. “Don't let him off the hook quite so easily. He's as much a product of this fucked up culture as we are, but he tries to fight against it."

"It's not an easy struggle."

"No, it's not. But his parents brought him up well."

"His mother offered to help me if I need it." I’m still surprised by it.

A fond smile crosses his face. “Yeah, she's like that. She's always been big on omega rights."

"Why?"

"Does she need to have a reason?"

"No. But also yes. Usually there's a reason when an alpha bucks against the system."

Why fight against a system that benefits them, that keeps them in power?

Oliver sighs. “Her sister was an omega. And she ended up in an awful pack who treated her like shit. She uh... well, she found freedom her own way."

I gasp when I figure out what he means. “Shit."

He winces. “Yeah."

I shake my head, heart aching for the mayor and her sister. “And then her own omega died?"

"Yeah. He got fucking cancer."

"Goddam."

"Pretty much. You would’ve gotten along well with him. He was fascinated by biology too." A fond smile curls Oliver’s lips.

"I'm sorry I never got to meet him.”
