It’s the one choice in this damn life we have. A choice fought hard and died for by omegas who came before us.

My mother huffs. “Fine. I'll remain here in town while they "court" to make sure things progress as they should. Until they deny her as I'm sure they will since they have an omega already. They don't need my broken daughter. And when that happens, you can accept the alpha I brought you or you can join the ranks of breeders."

My mother rises abruptly, making my father jump, his eyes still glued to the floor. "Come."

She stomps from the office, the other two following in her wake, leaving me red-faced and a mixture of furious and humiliated and scared. I can feel the rage of the guys surrounding me, but they don't let it rise to the surface, instead they each reach out and stroke comforting hands along my arms and back.

I'd hoped she would at least pretend some civility since we were in front of strangers, but I should’ve known better. My mother has never felt an ounce of shame over who she is, and she's never hidden her violent dark side. No one seems to care anyway. No matter how many bruises and scratches my father and I walked around with. We're just omegas.

Even if charges were pressed against her, she'd just be right back home, even more pissed off. Which we'd then pay for.

I tried telling someone and asking for help once.

After that, I learned to keep my mouth shut.

"What the fuck was that?" Grey asks, barely restrained fury shaking his voice.

My shoulders slump. “My mother is an alphahole?"

The mayor shoots me a sympathetic look. “Yes, dear, I believe that we all realized quite fast. And I'm going to make sure she isn't able to force you into anything. You certainly will not be sent to be a breeder. A sick practice in the first place."

"I'm sorry for all this." I lower my head, not wanting to look any of them in the eye.

Oliver wraps his arms around me in a sweet hug. “You have nothing to apologize for. Least of all, her. I've met dozens of alphas like her. Maybe hundreds. It's nothing we haven't all seen before."

"The plan you have should work, but unless you follow through, it won't hold up forever,” the mayor warns. “And none of you should make that decision because there are no other choices. That's no way to start a bonding of any kind. I swear to all of you that I will make sure Aurora does not end up bonded to that alpha, or sent to the breeders."

"Thank you,” I say, my voice muffled by Oliver’s chest.

"Why don't you all head home? Have dinner delivered. Try to relax. I'm going to make some calls to get ahead of this."

I'm still a bit dazed as the guys herd me from her office and the building.

Too bad my mother is waiting for me right outside.
