Riithan squeezed her. “I believe they get the point, princess.”

She sighed. “Right. Sorry. I took a course on the Sethir-Nin when I was at college. I keep getting mad when I think about it.”

The king looked at her. “I need to have a word.”

Riithan let her go. “I will be here. Call if you need me.”

His father offered Ylara his hand, and she was led away from the gathering.

She remained quiet as she was led into a study, and the king guided her to a couch while he sat in a nearby chair.

She looked at him, sitting gracefully. The training was paying off.

“You don’t have a high opinion of our people.”

“Not in regard to the treatment of their omegas.”

“They are a precious resource.”

“They are people. We don’t go into heat and stay there. We come out of it, and we can’t just surrender all of our freedoms or hobbies.”

He sighed. “We only restrict those who are a danger to themselves.”

“Then I will not be passing along information. Because one of them is a heavy hitter who looks like a pixie, and the other can whistle a hole through the wall.” She smiled. “I am not going to hand information over on either of those ladies until I know they will keep their freedoms.”

“Our people are warriors. Alpha after alpha. They need to know she is safe if they have a mate.”

“Fine. Send the ladies to stay with me or Vallu or Brit or even Sabine. We are safe, we are protected, and they need a chance to get back into the rhythm of the world. Even if they are pregnant.”

“Do you wish to live apart from Riithan?”

“No. Not as long as we can continue here on Daycross. I have a large family that has just gotten larger. My niece is going to come to visit every two weeks. If I disappear without notice, assassins will come looking for me.”

“You are in danger?”

“They are my sister and brother-in-law.”

He looked skeptical. “Do they have names?”

“Khytten and Salat.”

“Interesting.”

“It’s a little weird, but they are getting used to it.”

“Do you love my son?”

She froze. “Honestly, I think it has started. There is part of him in my mind, my thoughts at all times. His coldness wouldn’t have hurt so much otherwise.” She sighed. “I think part of me is waiting for it to happen again.”

She was nervous but saw a vision of the king standing with her daughter at a gun range. That relaxed her a little.

“What did you see?” He cocked his head.

“It is very strange.”

“What?”

So she told him, and she answered all his questions for the next thirty minutes. He didn’t try to soothe her fears but gave her information.
