“Edith?” My voice rumbles from his lips with a growl, and I turn to see he's standing over me with a concerned look on his face. “Are you sick?”

“Not really.”

“What does this mean? Not really?” Sinking down on the bed next to me, his large hand slides under my head, pulling me up.

I allow myself to fall forward against his broad chest, savoring the way the energy dances between us. Despite my misgivings, this is where I’m supposed to be. I’m sure of it.

Without me and my ability to see the past visions of the species who used the portal, the Ropors would still have access to Earth. Once their little trial with Cal and I, and probably the other women, is over, there’s no doubt they’ll be going back for more women.

After all, as far as they know, what’s stopping them?

Now, at least that can’t happen. I twist the ring around my finger, studying the ornate design on the side. It looks like calligraphy.

“It means that I’m not one hundred percent happy to be in this situation. Nerves mess with my stomach.”

That’s putting it mildly. I don’t want to be a wimp about this, but ever since I saw my father kill that man in a fight when I was ten, I haven’t been able to stand any violence. It’s stupid and just plain wrong.

Cal’s big hand sweeps over my back, sending tingles through my body. Most of them are inappropriate right this second. “Is it me? Are you unhappy with me?”

“No!” Pulling back, I look up at his furrowed brows above his glowing eyes. “I’m just not used to this kind of violence. I don’t like to watch fighting—”

“This is necessary. I need to prove that you’re mine—”

“Do you? Is that really necessary?” I think about what Emma told us about the way Ropors are using the Orclans. For profit.

Basically, it’s the same story in every world, I guess. There are those in authority that are constantly using others for profit.

Cal stands, taking me with him in his arms. “I wish I could give you better.” The door to his room slides open, illuminating the edge. “I don’t know exactly what that would be because I’ve known nothing different, but I listen to the others. They’ve come from our home world, Burloo, and they say things are different there. Someday—”

He’s already moving through the dark hall, and the translation from my collar is drowned out as we enter a huge, full auditorium. We come out of a tunnel that appears to go right onto the field, and there’s a roar as we step into the light. Cal moves a set of goggles I didn’t realize he had around his neck up over his eyes.

His arms tighten around me. Turning to the right, he strides quickly along the bottom of the spectators, passing three other Orclans in boxes next to the dirt floor of the space that’s as big as a football field.

Holy shit!

There’s seating all around the large floor, and even though I can only see about three to five rows up behind the boxes since the light is blinding, I notice all kinds of species. Green isn’t the only strange color. Every color in the rainbow is lining the seats, and on some of them, I’m not even sure I’m looking at their faces.

Squeezing my eyes shut, I let my head drop onto his chest, curling tightly into Cal. Taking deep breaths, I let him scent relax me, and it seems to work. Otherwise, this is more than I can handle right now.
