Chapter Thirteen

“Cleonda,”Calsnarls, glaringat the green woman outside the lit up door. I pull down the blanket he’s thrown over my naked body.

Fuck! Where did she come from so fast? Was she outside the door listening?

“Cal.”

Even I can tell the derisive way she snarls his name. I wonder what went on between them?

I study the sheer dress and gold crown this woman is wearing. The green skin, bald head, and big ears identify her as one of his species. Neither of them introduces her.

“We should go,” Cleonda announces, turning to walk down the dim hall.

Wow! She’s chatty.

Cal and I scramble to throw on clothes before we both leave the room. He has to find another shirt for me to wear as a dress, and the entire time, the door is still hanging open. Gathering me in his arms, Cal races out the door to catch up to her.

She spins around, glaring as we get closer. “Not you.”

Cal snarls, stepping forward to tower over the woman. “If she goes, I go. This I know from Luc. She’s my mate.”

Cleonda makes a snort that has her nose flaring. “That isn’t established yet—”

“It is.” Cal’s voice escalates. “She is my mate!”

Cleonda crosses her arms, looking back and forth between us. I feel about two inches tall with the way she looks down at me. “That’s fine. But be warned. If you come with us and cause any trouble, the same shock you receive, she will too. You’re linked.”

As she spins around, moving down the hall without us, she throws over her shoulder, “The Human females are weak. If you misbehave, you may kill her. They don’t handle the shock well.”

I tug on the collar around my neck, looking at Cal questioning. His jaw tightens, but he hurries after her, catching up in a few strides. Nuzzling my neck, he murmurs, “It will be fine. I just want to be with you.”

I admit I feel the same way.

“Yes, yes. I heard the same thing from Luc. And I don’t care.” Cleonda leads us down the hall, turning to the left and heading up some stairs before we reach the arena we were in earlier. At the top, we zigzag through a few doors before entering the portal room I cut across earlier.

Has it really only been a day? If that…

Veering to the right, we stop next to the wall, and a panel of doors opens. Just inside is Emma... and Luc.

Wiggling in Cal’s arms, I attempt to get down, ignoring Cleonda’s announcement about getting Alexa and Nako. I’m too fixated on Emma waving us in, signing while she greets us. I’m going to have to concentrate on understanding her ASL while she says entirely different things.

“Edith, it’s so nice to see you again.”

“Put me down,” I urge Cal, watching her hands move.

“You mentioned you locked the portal? No one from here can travel to Earth. Can you do it again?”

I take a minute to comprehend what she’s asking as we hug each other tightly. Pulling back, she introduces Luc. “This is my mate, Luc.”

“This is Cal.” I gesture back at him before signing back, “Do you mean lock it to Earth again? It should be set—”

“No. I mean, if we go to Burloo, the Orclan dimension. Can you lock it behind us so they can’t follow us there?”

I’m thankful I could even understand that because she’s already talking to Luc and Cal. “You said you guys are friends. Why are you glaring at each other?”

Glancing over, I see she’s right. But she’s already turned, looking at me expectantly to answer.

“In theory. I haven’t even checked what I did before, to Earth—”
