VERA

Ihad fallen asleep in Sean’s arms and ended up better rested than I had been in years, despite having to get up at five for work and now rushing to get Glen to the neurologist.

As much as I wanted to blame my good night's sleep on a few good orgasms, I knew the truth—Sean made me feel safe.

This was going to get all screwed up in my head. Sean had said he didn’t do serious relationships. We were only faking the engagement. A little harmless fun was all this could ever be. If I fell for him and got my heart broken, it would serve me right.

I parked in front of Faina’s office and turned to Glen, but my eyes caught a black Audi that looked weirdly familiar. Or maybe I got the creeps because of the man behind the wheel, who quickly looked away.

“You okay?” Glen asked.

“Yes. Just wanted to ask if you wanted me to come with you or not. I mean, I want to know if your brain is as good as you say it is, but you have the right to privacy.”

He snorted. “You’re going to find out, anyway. That doctor is your friend, right?”

“She won’t tell me anything you don’t want me to know.”

He thought it over for a moment. “I’d rather go alone.”

“Okay, I’ll wait for you here.”

As soon as Glen left the car, I pulled my powder case out of my back and pretended to do my makeup while checking out the Audi in the reflection. The guy just sat there, reading a newspaper, but every now and again, he looked up at me. Yeah, not creepy at all.

Should I call Sean?

He had already taken extra days off for the camping trip. I couldn’t just pull him out of work over every weirdo who wanted to look at me. Besides, Glen would be out soon, and then I would meet up with Sean two hours later. We had to go shopping for Glen’s birthday gifts.

An eternity later, Glen came out of the office in a much better mood than he went in. As he swung the car door open and hopped in, he grinned at me and showed me the signed release form.

I smiled at him. “Congratulations.”

“Thanks.” He buckled in, then went back to reading the paper as if it would tell him something new.

The engine of the Audi behind us purred to life, but it didn’t move. Was it going to follow us? I could test it.

“Mind if we don’t go home right away?” I asked.

Glen looked up at me. “Where are we going?”

Where? That was a good question. Should’ve thought about it before asking Glen.

“Supermarket. I was thinking, what if I let you pick what you want to eat from the produce section, so we can stop wasting food every evening?”

“Okay.”

I should’ve expected this level of enthusiasm. What kind of teenager enjoyed food shopping? Oh well, at least I could start driving and see what the Audi would do.

As I had thought, it followed us only a couple of cars behind. When we got to the store, it parked one row down, where it could see us going in and out, but as Glen and I went shopping, the driver didn’t follow us inside.

“So, what are your favorite sides?” I asked as I pushed the cart behind Glen.

“Mashed potatoes.” He took a large bag of those but then added sweet potatoes, too. “And salsa is good.”

I added tomatoes to the cart, intent on making fresh salsa instead of buying it in the jar.

“And I like pumpkin pie,” he said. “Does that count as a vegetable?”

“It does,” I agreed, adding a large pumpkin to our haul. “I know a couple of other things I can bake you with pumpkins. I don’t know why I hadn’t thought about that. I mean, the sweet potatoes I’m just not used to because we never got them at the orphanage, but pumpkins are my jam.”
