Kendall gave her a final wave and shut the door. “Thank you for brunch. It was perfect in every way.”
“Are you sure you don’t want a lift? I’m passing your place on the way.”
“It’s only a block, and it’s so nice out; I’d rather walk.” She reached forward, her fingers gently touching my chin, her eyes searing through me. “I’ll talk to you on Monday regarding that contract?”
“Out of all the things you could have chosen to have during that hour I blocked out for you, you want my negotiation skills …”
She laughed, her hand dropping. “In front of your niece? Shame on you, you dirty man.”
I watched her take several steps down the sidewalk before I climbed into the driver’s seat.
“She’s way awesome,” Everly said as I shut the door.
The doll had returned, perched high on Eve’s lap.
“I’m glad you liked her.”
I pulled out of the parking lot and onto the main road, catching sight of Kendall’s ass. Fuck, it looked so good in those pants, heart-shaped and luscious.
I honked as we passed and glanced in the rearview mirror as Everly waved through the window.
I waited to take a few more turns before I said, “What did Kendall whisper in your ear, the secret you’re not supposed to tell me?”
“I can’t tell, Uncle D.”
I knew if I started a tickle war, the words would fly out.
But this was more fun.
“What if I promise a big sundae with tons of hot fudge for after dinner?”
“Ohhh. I like extra fudge.” A smile moved over her face, and she squeezed the doll in her arms, wiggling in her car seat. “She said she likes you very much.”
“Is that right?”
She gave me a big nod. “And she wishes you would be her friend already.”
“She said that, huh?”
She yawned, resting her chin on the doll’s head. “Uncle D, what in the world are you waiting for?”
I laughed, shaking my head.
