He glanced away from the camera, giving me his profile and the thickness of his beard. “I’ll plan it when I get home.”

“You’re so good to her.”

His stare returned, making it almost hard for me to breathe. “Don’t let anything happen to her.”

“You know I won’t.” I found my lip, chewing the top. “I hope my rambling made you forget—you know, about the stressful parts of today.”

Even though I wish I could do more, that I could take away whatever is bothering you.

Because I would do anything for you.

“No, Sydney … you certainly didn’t make me forget.” He quieted. “Talking to you … I can’t stop remembering.”

My chest tightened.

I rested the phone on my bent knee when the screen started to shake.

“But you gave me exactly what I needed for right now.” He was moving, the background changing, and I could tell he was inside the restaurant. “I’ll call when this dinner’s over.”
