Epilogue

Four Months Later

Briyana

“So… what’s it say?”

My heart was racing as I nervously stood near the doorway with the collar of my sweatshirt pulled up over my mouth, watching intently as Lance picked up the stick I’d just peed on but was too afraid to look at myself. And when he was slow about giving me an answer, my anxiety skyrocketed as all the dreams I’d had of being a mom started flashing right before my eyes, my chest tightening until he read, “Not pregnant.”

“Oh thank God,” I sighed dramatically, bringing a hand to my still pounding heart as Lance chuckled and responded, “Damn. It’s like that?”

I was already moving a little closer so that I could see the test results for myself as I told him, “You know I’ll be happy to carry your bigheaded babies one day. Just notto-day.”

“Mmhmm,” he groaned as he pulled me against him in a hug, licking his lips before he suggested, “Guess we gotta try again.”

“Try again?” I repeated. “I wasn’t trying the first time!”

“You kinda were though.”

“I wasnot.”

“I’m pretty sure your exact words were,“Put a baby in me, Lance”,” he argued amusedly. “And who am I not to give my woman everything she wants?”

“Well in this particular instance, thank you fornotcoming through,” I responded, giggling as he easily lifted me onto the bathroom counter so that he could stand between my legs. And now that we were face-to-face, it was instinctive for me to throw my arms around his neck to pull him in for a kiss, our tongues doing a slow dance that left me moaning when I told him, “I can’t believe it's already almost time for you to head back.”

“I know, right? Shits crazy,” Lance sighed in disbelief, only to perk up once he added, “I’m excited though.”

Pouting, I whined, “You’re excited to leave me?”

“Come on, Yani. You know that ain’t what I meant,” he responded with a chuckle. “I just meant like, I’m excited to get back out on the field, and to get back in the trenches with my boys, and toactuallyparticipate in all the organized team activities this go-round...”

“Oh yeah. I guess you were still on your “fuck you, pay me” shit this time last year, huh?”

“Yeah, something like that,” Lance answered with a smirk as he helped me down from the counter. And as we relocated to the kitchen where the ingredients for his mom’s blueberry pancake recipe were waiting on us, I told him, “Well I’m excited for you too. Not for you to be gone, of course. But I know how important it is for you to get back to doing what you love,so… yay, Skyhawks.”

The little invisible pom-pom shake I gave with my cheer was intended to make him smile. But instead, Lance frowned as he released a heavy sigh that I didn’t understand until he leaned against the kitchen counter and said, “I still can’t believe we lost that damn playoff game the way we did.”

To be honest, I still couldn’t believe it either, that last play forever etched in my mind as one of the craziest things I’d ever seen live. And while I could only imagine how cool it probably was to be on the winning end of it, I knew being on the losing end had to hurt badly; especially for the person who’d taken the majority of the blame.

Kendall was tough, for sure. But dealing with something like that was a different kind of beast, just the thought making me wonder how well he was holding up when I asked, “Have you talked to Snoop at all?”

“Nah, not really,” Lance answered. “He’s been a little distant ever since we wrapped up the season.”

“Sounds about right,” I sighed. “But I guess you’ll be seeing him soon enough.”

Nodding to agree, Lance moved to my side of the kitchen where he said, “It's been nice to be away from it all for a little bit. So thanks for letting me come out here to stay with you.”

“Thank you for coming,” I replied with a grin, peeking down at his dick that was poking through his Skyhawks sweatpants when I added, “And for cumming.”

“Nah. By the way you reacted to that pregnancy test earlier, I can tell you don’t really appreciate my nuts like that.”

“Oh, shut up,” I laughed, making Lance laugh too as my attention went back to the pancake batter I was mixing. And even though I could feel him watching me adoringly, it still made me smile big when he actually said, “I love you.”

“I love you too,” I responded happily, getting ready to prepare my griddle until I realized how hard Lance was still staring at me. And when I looked over at him and he didn’t look away, I couldn’t help but giggle again when I asked, “What?”

“It's just wild how I didn’t even really know you this time last year,” he answered, making sense of why he’d been taking it all in. But when he grabbed my free hand to position me so that we were facing each other, I suddenly felt nervous as he slowly brought my hand to his lips for a kiss then said, “And now I literally can’t see my life without you.”

In the same way it had done earlier, my heart was pounding as I watched Lance dig into the pocket of his sweatpants while explaining, “I was gonna make this a whole thing with the positive pregnancy test. But since that ain’t go how I thought it would…”
