“Maybe that’s what I should buy today,” Emma says, forcing her smile even wider. “Whatever’s in that bag.”

The woman cocks her head a little, her expression the slightest bit wary now. Emma sees she’s rushed it, started to look a little desperate.

“I haven’t even had a chance to catalog it.”

Emma takes a breath, forces her shoulders down. “Could I just take a peek, though? I know it sounds a little crazy, but I got some sad news this week and I promised myself a little treat to help cheer me up.”

The woman’s face softens again. “Why not?”

With her heart racing, Emma watches as the woman reaches for the bag, slides it down the glass countertop, and tugs it open.

“Oh, wow, it’s actually quite lovely,” the woman says, looking inside.

A moment later, she pulls out the contents: a large silk scarf covered with birds and colorful wildflowers and the name Salvatore Ferragamo in script along the edge.

Exactly the type of scarf Taylor used to wear.
