“Why you conceited, bastard! I’ll have you know that I have no need for you and your rolls in the hay. For your information, I have made a celibacy pledge to myself. I’m not sleeping with any men, especially not you.”

After the shock wore off, I found myself in a fit of laughter. Silver was not so amused. “You, celibate? Come on, Silver. You’re like the energizer bunny beneath the sheets.”

Silver slapped me with a look that could leave permanent damage. “I made a celibacy pact with Ray the night she was supposed to marry Matt. But then she met Tyler so... but I kept my pledge. I’m only interested in my career and business now. No more men to mess with my mind and my emotions. No more men betraying me for a god damn commission.”

“I hardly betrayed you, Silver. We were pitching for the same account. And they went with my company.”

“Yeah, and karma took a bite out of you afterwards for a reason. You can’t even admit you did anything wrong.”

“I didn’t do anything wrong,” I said. She glared at me. “Fine, I should have told you I was pitching for Magnum too at the time. Here’s why I didn’t tell you: things were going so well between us, but since you are so damn competitive, it would have ruined everything between us.”

“It did ruin everything between us. And all of it was your fault for not being honest.”

“I would have been fine with either of us winning the account. Unlike you,” I said pointedly.

“Because I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth. Winning that account meant everything to me.”

“I can’t help who I was born to,” I said quietly. I hated it when people played that card. I’d worked hard to get where I was in life. My parents had money, yes, and had helped pay for my college, but that was it. Everything else I had was my own blood, sweat, and hard work.

“This was all a mistake,” Silver said. She grabbed her purse off the table where we’d been sitting. “I can’t work with you. I can’t be around you like this,” she said as she started to walk away.

I grasped her hand as she walked by me. “We have a business contract, Silver. And I am going to hold you to it.”

“Fine. I’ll stay for the Magnum account, but after that, I’m gone. I’m planning on leaving Las Vegas.”

I stilled in the moment. I had to be careful not to push her away. I was learning my silly competition at work had really burned her. More than I realized. She was not going to forgive me so easily. But I still had one ace up my sleeve. Her kiss, her reaction to my kiss, her body language told me everything. “As long as you follow your heart, you’ll be fine,” I said quietly.

She looked straight at me and shook her head. “No. That’s the part that got me in the trouble in the first place.”

And then she walked away, disappearing through the French doors into the crowded ballroom. And out of my life. Well, at least for the evening. I only hoped she’d show up at the office on Monday. I looked around, my mind quickly putting a plan together. Before I left tonight, I’d have to secure the meeting with the Magnum brothers. More than anything in the world, I’d have to win back that account.

And then, I’d start thinking about winning back my girl.
