Chapter 41

Now

Castemont was silent as he led me through the halls, his face etched in a smirk that made the fire crackle beneath my skin. I was also silent, my mind racing through what the next few hours of my life would look like, what they would amount to. I needed answers that I was not going to get, not now at least.

As we arrived at the door to the rooms I’d been given, two masked soldiers already standing guard, I stopped. “I’m the Daughter of Katia.” My voice was emotionless, and though it wasn’t a question, Castemont answered.

“You are.” That maddening smirk remained.

I pinned him with my stare. “Tell me then, loving step-father.” The only thing keeping me from lunging for his throat was my blistered hands. “If I’m the Daughter of Katia, who is my father?”

He let out a low, gruff laugh and nodded. “Smart girl. That’s a secret only I know.”

“Who. Is. My. Father?”

He licked his lips, inclining his head only to stare down his nose at me, sick amusement lacing his features. “Your father, yourrealfather, is Rhedros, Keeper of the Blood Saints.” I stilled. “You, darling girl, are the Sin of Saints.”
