Chapter twenty-nine

When Grey said he wouldn’t be far, apparently he meant he’d be right next door. We flew from Scotland to Barbados, then took a private boat to a different island. Just in case someone was watching. It seemed someone was always watching. Grey even brought Mrs. McTavish along. He said it was for appearances. I said it was his way of giving her a much-needed vacation, even if it was just a couple of days.

Right now, my heart was going crazy in my chest as I stood in the doorway of Tatum’s new home, watching her look over her wedding dress. I ached for this moment. I’d missed so much already.

Caspian let me in and left me be. He said this was our time.

I’d imagined this scene a million times over the last four and a half years, and now that it was here, I wasn’t sure my heart could handle it. I took a deep breath to calm my frantic nerves.

Her long dark hair was pulled up into a ponytail, and her skin looked like it had been gently kissed by the sun, probably from living here on this island. Her curves had filled out a little more, but she still had the lean body of a dancer. She looked exactly the same… but different. She looked overwhelmingly happy.

And that mademeoverwhelmingly happy.

I accidentally leaned on the door, pushing it open with a creak.

“You really couldn’t wait one more day?” Tatum said as she spun around.

I blinked back my tears and smiled. “You didn’t think I was going to let my best friend get married without me?”

Her reaction was immediate. She sank to her knees, tears falling freely down her face, like she’d either lost the will or the ability to hold herself up. Like she’d been standing strong for five years and now she was done. Now, she could let the strong act go and just… be.

I knew that feeling because I felt it too as I dropped down beside her and pulled her into a hug.

“How?” Her voice cracked through her tears.

I huffed a laugh. “Caspian.”

She looked up at me. “Caspian?” she asked. And then she fell apart. Her body shook with her sobs as she fought to control it.

I didn’t blame her. I wanted to fall apart too. This was a day I never thought I’d see again, me in the same room with the one person who always understood me. Well, one of the two people who understood me. My emotions were all over the place, and I hadn’t even seen Lincoln yet.

I held Tatum close and rubbed my hand over her hair. I couldn’t fall apart. One of us had to be strong. I needed her, but she’d been living with grief for the past four years and right now she needed me more.

I saw the look in her eyes when I said Caspian’s name. “I know what you’re thinking, and he’s not the bad guy here.” I swiped my fingers under her eyes, wiping her tears. “But we have all night to talk about that. Right now, I want to see that gorgeous fucking body.” I cupped my hand over one of her boobs. “Seriously. What the fuck, T?”

She chuckled and sniffed and just like that, I had my best friend back.
