I bolt upright and awaken mid-scream. Strong hands grip my arms.

“Liv! You’re ok.” John is in front of me. I focus on him and suck in a breath as I still. A nightmare. It was only a nightmare. I collapse into John on a sob, and he holds me tight.

“It’s ok. You’re safe.” He rubs soothing circles on my back as I struggle to calm down.

Once I get my breathing under control, I scrub at my splotchy face. Dylan stands in the doorway, both hands on the frame with lowered eyebrows. Garrett sits on the end of the bed with the same expression.

I sniffle as the tears continue to pour out of me. “I’m sorry I woke you.”

“Don’t apologize, Liv. We’re here to help you,” Garrett says.

Dylan hands me a tissue and I wipe my face. John rearranges the blankets for me as I settle into the bed. He pushes my matted hair off my forehead and smiles down at me, squeezing my arm over the blanket before he and Dylan leave the room. Garrett moves over to the air mattress, and I stare at the open doorway where Luke was in my dream.

“Garrett?”

“Yea?” The air mattress squeaks as he lifts his head up.

“Can you come lay with me? Just until I fall asleep.”

He gets up and I make room for him. He settles onto his back and I do the same. I take in a calming breath and close my eyes. Garrett isn’t Luke, but he’ll keep the monsters away, at least for tonight.
