“Still impressed.”

The path narrows and Dad shoots out a head but stays close.

“I’m sorry about last night.”

I shrug. “It’s not really your fault.”

We run in silence for another few minutes. “Would you mind showing us around town today? Your uncle volunteered you, but there’s no pressure.”

“Yea. We can do that.”

“Cool. I’d love to see what you’ve been up to.”

We fall into silence, besides my harsh breathing that I try to temper, but it’s no use. I keep casting glances at Luke. It’s still surreal that he’s here. He’s so sexy like this, strong and confident. I never thought of that benefit when he would ask me to run with him. I laughed in his face because I’m an idiot.

Up ahead, the guys have caught up with each other and they race down the driveway. Garrett pulls out ahead at the last second, but I’m impressed by how well my dad and uncle keep up.

It’s then I realize my dad left us alone at some point.

“Do you want to race?” he asks, but I’m already kicking it into gear. I sprint ahead and his laughter follows me.

We fly down the driveway. Luke pulls out ahead halfway through, but I dig deep and pace him. He crosses the finish line only a step ahead of me.

We jog up the path to the ranch house, and he grins at me. “Damn. I didn’t expect that.”

“Me neither,” I say, and we both chuckle.

We join the group at the ranch house. “She almost beat you,” Jackson says to Luke.

“That’s the fastest I’ve ever seen you run. What was the wager?” Garrett asks.

“I forgot to make one,” I say as I collapse onto the step. Luke stands with his hands on his hips, his breathing already slowing.

“How about Luke takes you on a date this week?” Brando says.

There’s a chorus of cheers as I glare at him. “No.”

“Booooo,” Jackson calls, his hand cupped around his mouth so the sound carries.

I smirk before I can stop myself and Luke chuckles. “Cool it, assholes.”

He kneels in front of me, making my pulse skip. “I’d love to take you on a date, but only when you’re ready.”

He always knew what to say. I relax and nod. “I appreciate the offer. But, no.”

He nods and stands. Jackson boos again, but Luke smacks him upside the head. Jackson only winks at me, and I hide my smile by standing and walking down the path to the house.

After breakfast, I take a shower and change into leggings and a tank top. I fix my hair into a ponytail and apply some lip gloss. I don’t put too much effort considering Luke already saw the gremlin and didn’t run screaming in the other direction. Then I kick myself for caring.

We head out in the SUVs they rented to show them around town.Brando slides into the driver’s seat and I bolt for the passenger side before they can force me next to Luke. But he takes the car in front of us with Mark, Jackson, Garrett, Jordy, and Skye. Vera and Dylan take the back seat of our car and we pull out onto the road, waving to my mom on the front porch.

“You going to show us the gym I designed later?” Brando asks with a smirk.

I shake my head. “And that Luke funded?”

He chuckles. “You need to quit fighting and give in to the inevitable.”

I cross my arms. Maybe I should have gone in Luke’s car. He’s the only one not pushing me.
