Specter

Thefarmisquietin the late hours of the night. An owl hoots in the dark. I grip the handle of Charlie’s apartment door and break the knob off with a flick of my wrist. It’s pitch black, but I find his heat signature in the living room.

“Ever heard of knocking, asshole? I’ve been waiting for you,” Charlie says from the recliner. He drops the footrest and stands.

“Then you know why I’m here.”

He nods and makes his way over to the kitchen. “You want a beer?” The fridge lights up the galley kitchen when he opens the door.

“No, thanks.” He shuts it and pops the top off his bottle, taking a long pull.

“You have to stop pursuing Liv.”

“So I’ve heard, painfully loud. Did you know Raven could turn the volume up on our implants? Or that he’s a huge cockblock?”

I smirk as he moves back to the chair, and I sit on the couch. “What’s your end game here?” I ask.

“I’ve never met anyone like her. She’ll be able to understand me, just like Grant did.” His eyes flash a myriad of colors, a sign of his swirling emotions he lets show when nobody is around.

Charlie and his identical twin brother had the same abilities. Grant died when we attempted to rescue him from Infinitum. He’s the first and only agent we’ve lost and even though it was years ago, and I never really got to know him, it still stings. I can only imagine the pain Charlie still feels, especially as an Empath.

“I don’t recall you needing to make out with your brother for him to understand you.”

“Fuck off. She’s gorgeous, and she makes me laugh. Let me have this. Please.”

“It’s not that simple.”

“I can protect her.”

“Charlie, she’s still in love with Luke.”

“She doesn’t want to be.”

“Don’t be stupid. I don’t need your abilities to sense how strong their connection is.”

He sighs and takes another pull from his beer.

“She’s been Dream Sharing with him. Involuntarily.”

His beer stops moving for a second as he brings it down to the table next to him. “How is that possible? He’s not an agent. I would have felt it.”

“We’re trying to figure that out.”

He pinches the bridge of his nose and lays his head back. “Fuck. And neither of them are aware?”

“Nope.”

“She must hide him from me subconsciously. That explains a lot, actually.”

“You didn’t try anything when you were in there, did you?”

He scowls at me. “I would never do that without her full consent.”

I raise an eyebrow and his features soften. “We kissed. That’s all. It was the night I thought she was being watched, but it was just some teenagers horsing around.” He finishes his beer and picks at the label.

“She won’t, but let’s say she chooses you. How do you think she’ll react when she finds out the truth?”

He yanks the label off the bottle and crumples it into a ball. “She’ll understand.”
