“Let me guess, she saw some tabloid thing about you and freaked out?”

“No. It was my fault. She’s innocent in all of it.”

He grumbles something under his breath. “So, how are you going to fix it?”

I look over and meet his eyes. “I have to let her go.”

“How’s that working out for you?”

I take a gulp of beer and set the glass down. “I’m wrecked.”

“When you find someone like Liv, you don’t just let her go.”

“No offense, but you’re the last person I’d take relationship advice from.”

He laughs. “None taken, but you know I’m right.”

“Is this why you asked me to meet you? To tell me things I already know?”

He grumbles again and takes a sip of his beer. “I wanted to see your handsome mug… and ask you to come down to San Diego with me this weekend for my buddy’s bachelor party. He’s a tech nerd and wanted to meet you.”

I sigh and shake my head. “San Diego is a no go. I’m giving Liv her space.”

He huffs out an annoyed sigh. “And how long will that take?”

I shrug. “Set up a different time up here for your friend and I’ll meet him.”

He downs the rest of his beer and orders another.

“What’s new with you?” I ask.

He smirks at my obvious deflection, but rolls with it. “The usual. Katarina leaves for Europe next week and that will be the end of that.”

Brody has never had a serious long-term relationship. He hasn’t figured out yet it’s because he dates women who are only interested in bedding a pro-quarterback. He doesn’t seem to mind, but I hope one day he grows up.

“Is she aware of that?”

He laughs. “She’ll figure it out.”

We’re interrupted by a dude in a fancy suit who Brody recognizes. They exchange a few pleasantries, then Brody returns his attention to me. “He walked in on me fucking his girlfriend last year. He kicked her out and poured me a drink. Cool dude. We’re golfing next week,” he says, and I shove his shoulder.

“You’re a douche canoe.”

He laughs. “Well aware, my friend.”

I order another beer as we continue to chat. LA lost their playoff game a few weeks ago, which is part of the reason I’m here. We talk about the game and the mistakes he made, then we move on to reminiscing.

“Remember when your mom would take us to IHOP?” he asks.

“I do. She loved the cinnamon pancakes.” Brody is the only one of my friends who got to know my mom before she died.

“I would help your sister color and work through the mazes on her placemat. She was such a cute little kid,” he muses.

“Yes, she was. She still draws, but it’s more of a hobby for her now. She’s set on working at Reilly Tech for Emilia.”

“She’s gonna rule the world,” he chuckles.

I smile. “Yep.”
