“Yea. It’s fine.”

He smiles and nods at Jackie, who returns to his paperwork. “I promise I’ll give you space,” he says as he hands Jackie his credit card.

He turns to Garrett and does a double take.

“These are my friends, Garrett and Dylan.”

Garrett extends his hand and Jeremy shakes it.

“Nice to meet you,” Jeremy says.

Garrett nods but stays quiet. Dylan scowls at him while they shake hands.

“How are you doing?” I ask.

“I got some help and cleaned up some messes in my life. So, I’m doing better.”

I return his genuine smile. “That’s great to hear.”

He clears his throat and steps closer, stopping when Dylan eyes him. “While I have the chance, I want to apologize for my past behavior. I wasn’t myself for lots of reasons, but that’s no excuse. You always deserved better.”

“Thanks Jeremy. That means a lot.”

There are a few seconds of awkward silence. His smile drops and he sighs. “I’m sorry it didn’t work out with Luke.”

He probably doesn’t mean it, but the fact he’s saying it speaks volumes about how different he is now.

I nod and glance at the floor. “Yea, me too.”

“Well, I better get to my workout. It was great seeing you. Maybe I’ll catch you around?”

“Yea. Have a good workout.”

He nods at us and makes his way to the locker room. I watch him disappear and turn to Garrett.

He raises an eyebrow. “That went well.”

“Yea, he’s different.”

Garrett shrugs. “Is that good?”

“Yea. He was a mess the last time I saw him.”

“I don’t like him,” Dylan announces, and Garrett and I laugh. He looks askance at us, but I just wrap my arm around his and we head outside to drive home.

Had you told me I would swap pleasantries with Jeremy one day, I would have laughed in your face. It’s more proof how unpredictable life can be, and how people can change.
