I motion for him to follow us. He glances around, then nods and follows me. I shove John to get him moving and we make our way to Mark and Brando, who are chatting in our less noisy private area.

They both stand to greet Brody. Dylan appears behind us out of nowhere. I swear he’s a ninja.

“What are you doing here?” Mark asks Brody.

“Bachelor party. Everyone I know is getting married,” Brody says with a chuckle.

John fidgets next to me and I find him resting his hands on his hips, then dropping them and repeating the movement. I decide to put him out of his misery.

“Brody, this is John.”

Brody smiles at my brother and extends his hand. “Nice to meet you, man. Liv told me a lot about you.”

John glances at me, all smiles, and shakes his hand. “It’s an honor to meet you.”

Brody scoffs. “Let me get you guys a drink. What are you celebrating?”

“Liv’s 30th birthday,” John says before I can open my mouth.

Brody flashes his dimples at me. “Oh right, dirty thirty? Hell yea. Let’s do this.”

He flags a server down and orders a round for us. He motions for John to sit with him on the small sofa and John jumps to do his bidding. It doesn’t take long for Brody to put him at ease. We take the shots, Brody saluting me, then Brando orders me a drink. A cheerful buzz fills my body. Some time passes and Brody sits next to me on the lounge I’m parked on. “You never answered me earlier. How are you?”

I shrug. “I’m ok.”

He nods and purses his lips. “I think you’re telling me the truth.”

“I passed the test?”

He chuckles. “I also think Luke made a huge mistake.”

I nod and sip my drink. “Join the club.”

“He’s going to figure it out soon.”

“What do you mean?”

“The only question is, what are you going to do about it when he comes crawling back?”

I narrow my eyes at him. “That won’t happen.”

He shakes his head. “That’s exactly what’s going to happen.”

“It doesn’t matter.”

“Why not?”

“Because he betrayed my trust. Things around us were in chaos, but they were getting better. I thought we could get through it. I was putting in the work. I thought he was too, but out of nowhere he shoved me away like yesterday’s trash and I’m still reeling from it.”

He sighs and rubs the back of his neck. The gesture is exactly how Luke does it and I’m reminded how long they’ve known each other.

“He told me what happened." He takes my hand and squeezes. "I'm so sorry you had to go through that. I'm not surprised he reacted the way he did. But I can tell you with one hundred percent certainty, that it was out of love for you."

I shrug and he releases my hand.

“Did he ever tell you about his parents?”

“He mentioned them a few times.”
