He puts his hands up in surrender. “I’m sorry, I was just trying to make sure you were ok. You sounded like you were in distress.”

Garrett swims over, his gaze bouncing between us. “What happened?”

“She was crying out, so I thought she needed help.” He rubs his jaw as he watches me with curiosity and a hint of arousal in his dark gaze.

Realization sets in along with mortification and my face heats.Oh my God. I can still feel the aftermath of my orgasm between my thighs. Did I get off in my sleep? My eyes widen in horror when I recall Charlie’s hard cock pressing against my core before I jumped off him. I glance down and confirm I’m still in my bathing suit. At least there’s that.

“I think she was dreaming. I didn’t realize it until she called me Luke,” Charlie says.

Well, that’s enough embarrassment for today. “I’m sorry. I wasn’t aware of my actions,” I mumble, then paddle to the dock as fast as I can. They both let me go without trying to catch up and I thank the universe for minor miracles.

I climb the ladder and find them swimming towards the dock. Garrett watches me with concern, Charlie with something akin to confusion. I can relate. What the hell was that? It seemed so real. My body agrees with me. But it couldn’t have been. Disappointment seeps in, and I push it aside to deal with it later. My skin still feels like it’s on fire where Luke caressed me. I attempt to compose myself as I walk past the townsfolk, who are unaware that I just groped a man when he tried to rescue me from my wet dream featuring my ex-boyfriend.

I grab my towel and wrap it around me. Garrett and Charlie approach, but I avert my gaze. “Hey, Liv. It’s no big deal.”

I take a calming breath and meet Charlie’s eyes. He grins and my lip quirks up on the side. “If you kissed your ex like that, he’s an idiot for leaving you.”

Oh God. I palm my forehead and they both chuckle. “I’m serious. You can call me Luke and kiss me anytime you want.”

Stupid universe. I take back my thanks.

Charlie puts a hand on my exposed shoulder and goosebumps form. I pull the towel tighter. “I’m just giving you a hard time. Don’t sweat it. I’m glad you’re ok.” His smile is reassuring, and I nod. He says his goodbyes and I let out a long breath. Garrett crosses his arms and stares at me with a raised eyebrow.

“Another dream?”

I nod and wipe the water off my face. I swallow as the sadness that it wasn’t real takes over. “It felt so real, Garrett,” I mumble into his shoulder when he wraps me in a hug.

He rubs my back. “I’m sorry, Liv. Don’t get mad when I say this, but you can make it real. You don’t have to keep suffering without him.” He takes me by the arms and steps back to look down at me.

I heave out a sigh. “No.”

He shakes his head but doesn’t push the issue.

“I’m done for the night. I’m going to the house.” My happy and relaxed mood is long gone.

“But you’ll miss the fireworks.”

I shrug. “I’ll watch them from the house. You can stay here with Tina. I’ll be fine.”

He sighs and leans down to grab our stuff. “I go where you go, remember?”

I put my hand on his arm to stop him. “No, Garrett. Please. I don’t want your night to be ruined because of me. You deserve to have fun without worrying about me.”

He waves to Tina, and she sighs and nods. “It’s fine. I’m tired anyway.”

He’s lying, but I know he won’t budge. I help him carry the stuff to the house. We pass my dad, who’s camped in a lawn chair, my mom draped over his lap. He drops his beer from his lips and sits up with concern, but Garrett gives him a thumbs up and he relaxes. Thank God. I don’t want to explain what just happened to my father.

I thank Garrett when we get inside, then head up to take a shower. Flashes of my vivid dream roll through my head, making me even more sad. We watch the fireworks from the back porch, then I sit curled up next to Garrett while he texts Tina and we pretend to watch a movie. The dream replays in my mind, but I keep dwelling on a pair of broad shoulders and soft lips that don’t belong to Luke.
