Breakfast of Champions

Maggiefeltlikeshe’d been asleep for days. She couldn’t seem to will her eyelids to open. She was so warm and relaxed and she lay still taking in the sensations. She realized a heavy weight was around her waist and she felt like a heating pad was at her back. Her hand explored the weight and realized it was a warm arm. The arm tightened around her middle when she started to trace the lines of the muscles there and everything came rushing back. Zane. Here in her bed. Wrapped around her. She smiled and felt lips and stubble on her jaw.

“Good morning,” Zane said, pulling her closer against the hard planes of his chest.

“Yes, it is.” Maggie giggled and turned her head to meet his mouth. “I could get used to waking up like this.”

“Mmmm, me too.” Zane kissed her again and, before she knew it, she was under him again looking up into his eyes. “We need to discuss something first, however.”

He looked serious and Maggie felt a pang of panic in her gut. I knew it couldn’t really be this perfect. “Wh..what?”

He glanced over her head toward the headboard. “Really, sweetheart, how many pretty pillows does one person need? I thought I was going to have to mount a search and rescue mission to find you in the bed last night!”

She snorted and slapped playfully at his chest. “You! I was about to panic!” Zane gave her a 1000-watt smile. “And, I’ll have you know, all of these pillows are necessary and absolutely make the room.”

Zane nuzzled her neck and looked around. “Well, they make it even more pink,” he quipped, “and, I guess we could find uses for them. They’ll probably be handy when I have you on your knees and...”

“Zane!” Maggie cried, red quickly covering her cheeks. She threw her hands over her eyes in embarrassment. What had been sexy last night was a little out of her comfort zone in the light of day.

He laughed. “What? I’m a planner. I want to be prepared. I know you like it when I’m prepared.”

She felt the blush overtaking her but laughed again. “Stop. You’re embarrassing me.”

“Aww, Maggie, you’re going to have to get used to it,” he said, his mouth skating down her neck to her collarbone. “Now that I’ve had a taste, I’m addicted. I may never let you wear clothes again.”

“That would be rather scandalous at the cafe,” she murmured, starting to breath heavier as his mouth continued to lick fire across her skin. “I’m not sure Sofia and JT would approve.”

Suddenly, she tensed. Zane felt it immediately. “What’s wrong?”

“JT. How are we going to get you out of the house with him here?”

He looked at her with a puzzled expression. “Why would we need to sneak me out of the house? He’s your brother, not your father, and you’re a grown woman.”

“Well, yes, but, uh...I’ve never...” she stuttered.

“You’ve never what?” Zane asked, resuming trails of kisses across her collarbone down to the top of her breast.

“I’ve never actually had a man stay overnight before, since we bought the house together,” Maggie confessed. “You know how cave man he’s been about us dating. I don’t know how he’ll react.”

Zane fell back on the mattress chuckling. “This is going to be fun.”

Maggie pushed up to stare at him. Horror in her eyes. “What do you mean? What are you going to do?”

He threw back the covers and leapt from the bed, grabbing Maggie up in his arms. She squealed, grabbing onto his neck. “First, we’re going to shower, then go have some breakfast. JT and I will be just fine. Don’t you worry.” But she definitely did.

“Do you want waffles or pancakes for breakfast, sister mine? I’m in a carbo load mood this morning.” JT stood at the counter mixing batter in a bowl, his back to the door to the hallway. He was wearing a pair of grey sweatpants and nothing else, his blonde hair standing up in disarray.

“Not sure what your sister would like, but I’d love some waffles,” Zane replied. “Bacon would be great too. I’m starving.”

JT whirled at the voice, whisk in hand. Zane ducked just in time to miss having flying batter land in his hair, but Maggie wasn’t so lucky. Globs of sweet batter showered her face and pink T-shirt as she stood in the doorway.

“Joshua Trent! What in the blue blazes are you doing?” She glowered at him, wiping batter from her cheek.

Zane stifled a laugh as he grabbed a napkin off the table and went to her, trying to help mop up the mess.

“Me?” JT yelled. “What the fuck’s he doing here? And his hair all wet from the shower to boot?”

Maggie reddened. Her fists tightened at her sides. Any embarrassment she had been worried about flying out of her head in her anger at her brother.
