There was no fucking time for a shower.I had to get to the hospital to tell her I love her. To apologize for not spending more time with her and the kids before the surgery. To console Will who would be a walking disaster. To make sure my mother eats because she forgets when she gets stressed.

“Hey. It’s okay, Simon. She knows. Beth knows. Go shower. There’s time. And when she’s safely out and in recovery, Addison is watching the girls so you can go and win her back.”

“I take it you had something to do with that, mon cœur,” I said, turning my palm over so I could squeeze her hand.

“You know I hate meddling, but you deserve happiness. Now go. You do smell awful.” She winked and gave my hands a final squeeze before letting go and situating herself on the couch, content to wait.

“Oh, and Simon,” she said, taking a book out of her purse and adjusting her glasses. “Your father is the one who brought me over.”

“Nana…”

“Simon. He apologized and wanted to come in and apologize to you as well. I understand how overwhelming this is, but you need to listen to him when we get to the hospital.”

Now was not the time to unpack all the baggage I had, but he’s my father, and if he was going to start an honest dialogue, I’d listen.

“I’ll listen,” I said, taking a sharp breath.

“Good. Now go shower.”

I hightailed it to the bathroom, stripping the rest of the way and turning the water as hot as possible. I had to scrub away the guilt and dirt of the past couple of days, see my sister safely through her surgery, talk to my father, then get my girl back. There wasn’t a second to lose.
