It’s a bright and warm day. The ocean is calm.

I’m relaxing in the sand with Cassie in my arms.

Life is just beautiful.

Except, something’s gnawing at me, and it has to do with Barry.

Honestly, cutting him off has been bothering me. Despite his behavior, I can’t shake the fact that I still want him in my life, and part of me wonders if I should give him another chance.

“You good?” Cassie pulls me out of my thoughts.

Looking down, I find her staring at me with sheer concern, the brown hue of her eyes illuminated by the sunbeams.

“Uh, yeah.”

A low huff follows my response. “Talk to me.” She straightens from my arms and sits beside me.

“I was thinking about Barry,” I admit.

Sympathy falls over her face, and she touches my arm affectionately. “Do you want to see him?”

“A side of me does, and at the same time, I don’t want to set myself up to get used or hurt again.”

“Has he called you since that night?” she asks.

“Yeah, but I’ve been sending him to voicemail.”

“Oh.” She twists her mouth in consideration. “You told me he was trying to find a steady job and turn things around. Maybe he just wants to let you know how it’s going for him.”

I raise my shoulders in an overstated shrug. “Does it even matter anymore?”

Tilting her head to the side, she lightly caresses my jaw and leans into me. “You haven’t blocked his number. That alone proves it still does.”

I consider her words while watching the sunlight dance on the water.

After a moment, I turn back to Cassie and say, “Want to go to Torrington? I’ll just pass by and see if his car’s there.”

A loving smile curls her lips. “If it is?”

“I…might see how things are. But only that.”

“Hmm. All right. Let’s go.”

We straighten from the sand and walk up the beach to the car. As much as Barry’s hurt me, it seems there will always be a place in my heart for him.

I arrive in Torrington several minutes later. My stomach tightens when I glimpse Barry’s Honda parked at the side of the building.

“What do you want to do?” Cassie checks.

I draw a deep breath and tell her, “I’ll talk to him. Come with me.”

“Okay.”

We file out of the car, and she holds my hand as we approach the door at the side.

I square my shoulders before knocking.
