The patio door opens, and Reid steps out. “You can remove your hands from her now.”

Logan scoffs. “What’s it to you? You’re her cousin.”

“Remove your hands, or I’ll break them.”

“Reid,” I hiss.

Logan drops his hands from me and passes a shocked look between us. “Cass, what is this? Why is he so territorial over you?”

I come out with it. “Because I’m his girlfriend.”

His eyes expand. “What?” Staggering from me, he walks to the end of the patio and holds his head with both hands. From his back view, I can tell he’s beyond hurt.

I turn to Reid, saying softly, “Babe, could you please give us a moment?”

He sighs. “Fine. Only because you called me babe.” He kisses my cheek before going inside and shutting the door behind him.

I mosey up to Logan’s side.

He pivots to me, jaw taut as he demands, “Since when?”

“Back in June,” I admit after a deep swallow. “By the third week, we were…exploring our feelings.”

He sputters a short, sarcastic laugh. “Shit.”

“We became so close, and something ignited between us. I’m in love with him.”

His eyes wilt at my confession. “Wow. I feel like an idiot. I thought you’d find it sweet that I came here for you. I thought you’d leave with me.” He looks down and kicks at the concrete.

I flick my nails, sad that I wasn’t honest the whole time. “I should have told you about Reid and me sooner.”

He groans and rubs his forehead. “I should have told you how I felt before you left. Even way before. Then again, would it have mattered? I saw how you looked at him, Cassie. You never looked at me like that. Do you have any feelings for me? Any at all?”

I delay for a second before telling him, “I’m sorry, Logan. I’ve never seen you in a romantic way.”

A low huff follows my words, and he glances down and shakes his head. “Damn.”

I touch his arm. “I’m sorry for hurting you. The last thing I want to do is hurt your heart.”

“No, that’s not on you. But it does hurt.” He sniffs. “Fucking hurts.”

“Logan, please don’t tell my parents.”

“I won’t,” he swears, expression serious. “I’m sorry I showed up unexpected. I’ll leave in the morning.”

My eyes burn with tears, and my voice cracks as I ask, “Is our friendship over?”

He rakes his hand through his hair with a low rumble. “I just need to be away from you for a bit. Just to get through this.”

I nod, understanding. “Um, the guest rooms are upstairs. Genevieve will set you up.”

“Sure.” With that, he steps past me.

I linger on the patio, holding myself as the tears fall. Things have changed between us forever.

Soon, loving arms encircle me from behind, and Reid whispers as I cry, “It’ll be all right.”

I rest my hands over his and relax in the comfort of his presence.
