“You came for Cassie?” Aunt Helena remarks, bobbing as she looks at Reid.

He sniffs and looks away.

Genevieve claps once. “It’s so nice of your friend to surprise you like this.”

“Yeah,” I murmur, uncertain of how I feel about it. “So nice.”

She bounces her gaze between Reid and me, seeming awkward. “Um, I’ll prepare a guest room.” She veers off inside.

“I trust you’re staying, Logan?” Aunt Helena confirms, staring at his bag.

“Oh, I don’t want to cause any inconvenience. I could just check into a—”

“No need,” she stops him with a wave of her hand. “We have plenty of rooms. Stay.” She glances at her watch. “Well, I should get to work.” She touches Reid’s arm as she walks past him. “It was nice meeting you, Logan. We’ll chat some more later.” She smiles at me. “Have a nice day, Cassie.”

Aunt Helena continues to the waiting car at the fountain, and Wren takes off from the estate as soon as she gets into the back.

Logan holds my hand, auburn eyes intense when I refocus on him. “Cass, can we talk?” He flicks to Reid briefly. “Alone.”

“Uh…” I glance at my boyfriend.

The veins in his neck are bulging, and there’s an insistent look in his eyes as if he wants me to tell Logan the truth.

I flick back to Logan and nod. “Yeah, sure. This way.”

He grabs his duffle bag, and I lead him inside and out to the back patio.

Closing the door, he turns to me and launches right into it. “Cassie, what’s going on with you? You’ve been so distant.”

I frown. “Sorry, Logan. I thought you understood I was taking the summer to connect with Reid.”

“And your aunt, too?” he asks, dipping his head and peering up at me.

“Yeah. Of course.”

He huffs and runs his hand through his dark hair. His strands are a bit longer. “It feels like you’ve become consumed with only Reid. I don’t know…” He turns his head slowly. “I guess I’m jealous.”

“Jealous? We’re best friends. Nothing will change that.”

He tilts his head back and groans. “I don’t want to be just friends anymore, Cassie.”

“What?” I mutter.

“You honestly have no idea? None at all?” He splays his hands. “Don’t you feel a thing for me, Cassie?” The imploring in his eyes saddens me.

“Is that what you’ve been trying to tell me? Is that why you came here?”

“Cass.” He touches my arms. “I love you. Not only as my best friend. I love you. I’ve been in love with you since I was thirteen. Before I realized I was.” He laughs short. “I love you, Cassie Radcliff.”

Oh, dear.

It pains me to hear my best friend of seven years confess his love because I’ll have to break his heart.

Reid was right. And perhaps I’ve always known Logan’s true feelings but have been denying it so as not to ruin our friendship.

“You feel the same, right? You have to.”

I press my eyes shut for a beat, then open them again. “I’m sorry.”
