“You’re a sweet girl, Cassie Radcliff. Reid’s so damn lucky.”

“I sure am. That’s enough.” I pry him from my girlfriend when I realize he’s holding her too long.

He chuckles while backing up a little. “I’m messing around.” Leaning over to his stash, he grabs two cups and pours liquid from a bottle. “It’s not strong.” He reaches the cups to us.

I shrug when Cassie looks at me, and we accept the drinks.

“To a great summer,” Mark cheers.

We all knock our cups and drink.

He’s right. The alcohol is barely noticeable.

“Oh. I got fireworks left over from Fourth of July,” Mark announces, hurrying off to set up some distance away.

Nichole offers a clean towel, and Cassie places it on the sand for us to sit.

While finishing the rest of our drinks, I drape my arm around her, waiting for Mark to start the fireworks.

“This was the best summer ever,” Cassie says in a close whisper.

“Of course. It’s the summer I fell in love with my cousin.”

My response draws giggles. Once they settle, I ask, “Will you live with me at the lake house after college?”

Eyes glistening from the small fire, Cassie sucks in a deep breath and answers on an exhale, “Yes. I love you, Reid.”

I’m too thrilled to formulate words, so I go in for a fervent kiss that has Michelle and Nichole oohing.

It feels like years passed before our lips slowly part, and Cassie smiles while caressing my face.

A whoosh in the distance lures our eyes to the sky. Cassie snuggles into my side as the fireworks proceed, creating blasts of sparkles along with the stars.

If only we could remain in this moment for four years. I wouldn’t have to let her go in the morning or spend the next months missing and longing for her.

But I know Cassie must live her life just as I need to. At least it isn’t the same as seven years ago. I won’t be left shattered with no idea of when or if I’ll ever see my love again.

We vowed forever this time, and I trust with all my heart that we’ll both keep that promise.
