“I’ve never,” I admit. “Have you? Well, of course, you have.”

He snorts. “Why do you think that?”

“Well, you’re an eighteen-year-old guy.”

“I could say the same for you,” he counters, lifting his brows. “The answer is no. I haven’t.”

That should not please me to hear. Yet it does.

I angle my head, telling him, “I’m surprised. Bristol?”

He shrugs. “We went on a few dates, that’s all. I wasn’t ready to be with anyone like that.”

“Wasn’t?” I catch, my pulse spiking. “Does that mean you’re ready now?”

Reid looks down, moistens his lips, then lifts his eyes again, face serious as he says, “Maybe.”

My pussy throbs in a needy response. My god. It’s becoming a puddle between my thighs, even though I’m already wet from swimming.

A shock of pleasure propels me from the sand at his light stroke on my finger.

Trying to act cool, I tell him, “I’m hungry.”

“Yeah, me too.” Reid straightens to full height. “What are you in the mood for?”

“Lobster roll.” I clear the gravel in my throat and add, “Please.”

He chuckles softly. “Sure. Whatever you want.” He treats me to another touch on my arm before walking away. To him, it might be simple, but every contact triggers the ache between my thighs.

Composing myself, I wander back to the bike to dress. Just after putting on the romper, my phone starts ringing. I retrieve it from the backpack, seeing Logan’s name on the screen.

Crazy that I’m not in the mood to speak to my best friend. “Hey, Lo, can I call you back?”

“That’s a first,” he drones. “All right. Talk later.”

I tuck the phone away once he disconnects.

Reid utters a low hum that reeks of annoyance, and I notice he’s twisting his mouth.

“What?” I ask, scowling.

“That guy calls you every day.” The bitterness in his tone surprises me.

“No, he doesn’t,” I argue, holding the helmet before me. “We’ve spoken three times since I’ve been here.”

“A lot.” He follows that with a sarcastic look. “It’s barely two weeks. Is this the first time you’ve been apart or something?”

I raise my shoulder in a half shrug. “We’ve been friends since the sixth grade.”

He flicks away, jaw stiffening as he picks at the bike handle. “He’s known you for seven years. I only had you for four.” The length of time seems to bother him.

Truthfully, I hadn’t thought about it until now. “Regardless of the shorter time, we share a different bond from what I have with Logan.”

I gulp as he refocuses on me, the green and gold of his eyes radiating profoundly in the afternoon sun. “This guy seems to have a special place in your heart. You light up whenever he calls. He makes you laugh hard. Sure there isn’t more between you?”

“There isn’t,” I insist. It hits me afterward that I’m trying to convince him like I would a boyfriend. “Reid, why are you—”

“I lied.” A sharp breath follows the two words like a weight has lifted.
