TWENTY-FIVE

The experience by the pond left my body yearning for Brandon more than ever.

Not a second passes where I don’t think about him. Feel the sweet flutters in my chest and the exhilarating fire at my core.

He’s unleashed something indescribable, and now that I’ve accepted I’m drawn, I want Brandon to be just as vulnerable with me.

I head to the girls’ bathroom during the fifth period, daydreaming about Brandon for the thousandth time that Monday. While at the sink fixing loose curls, I hear puking in one of the stalls.

Worry immediately submerges me.

“Are you okay?” I call out to whoever it is.

The girl coughs some more, and after another minute or two, flushes the toilet and exits the stall.

My eyes widen. “Britney?”

She looks pale, sickly. Blue eyes sunken.

Britney contrives a hollow smile and steps up to the sink. Her movements are slow, zombie-ish.

“Are you all right?” I ask, afraid for her.

“I’m fine,” she murmurs, voice sounding weak.

After rinsing her mouth, she turns to retrieve napkins from the dispenser.

Britney tries to press the button at the side but misses over and over as if she can’t see it.

Worry grows even more. “Hey, you don’t—”

She staggers in the spot. I hurry to grasp her arm before she collapses, helping to steady her.

“I’m fine, really,” she weakly insists.

“No, you’re not. I’m taking you to the school nurse.”

“Kayla,” she mumbles but doesn’t finish because she passes out against me.

“Britney! Oh my gosh!”

I hold her up while sending a quick text to Brandon. Then remember how he doesn’t touch people.

But he’s been making an effort with me.

Still…

Arm tight around Britney’s tiny frame, I lug her from the bathroom and down the quiet hallway. She doesn’t feel heavy at all, almost too light.

Reaching the office, I yell, “Nurse Carlisle. Britney needs help.”

“What happened?” the middle-aged woman sputters, jumping up from her chair.

“I’m not sure. She was throwing up in the bathroom, and then she passed out.”

Together, we lower Britney onto the bed.

“Can you hear me, dear?” Nurse Carlisle asks while checking her pulse.
