I stand there puzzled as she peels away and grabs the phone on her desk, saying to someone on the line, “I need an ambulance.” Her fingers fly across the keyboard as she continues talking.

From the look on the nurse’s face and the descriptions she’s giving, it’s evident she has an idea of what’s going on with Brandon’s twin.

“Kayla?” Brandon’s voice fills the room. He quickens inside. “What happened to her? Brit?”He appears riddled with concern.

He lowers, observing her face. But he doesn’t touch his sister.

“The academy notified your parents,” Nurse Carlisle informs him. “The ambulance is on the way.”

She tries to get Britney to come to, but all she does is mumble. She’s so pallid. Thin. Something’s wrong.

When the paramedics arrive, we follow them out to the parking lot.

It’s good that everyone’s in class. I’m sure Britney would hate if gossip started over her situation.

Brandon hastens to his car once the ambulance leaves. “I’ll keep you posted,” he tells me.

I want to go with him. But maybe it’s not my place.

So I remain rooted in the spot, watching as he peels out of school.

A strange chill cascades over me, and I hug myself and look around the parking area.

I’m the only one outside, in the company of a vast amount of fancy cars.

But I have the inkling someone’s watching me.

Nervous, I hasten back inside, praying that Britney will be all right.
