I nod while stepping closer. “Of course. I’ll go with you.”

Annalise hums in glee, then cuts to Kayla. “But…what about her?”

“Forget her.” I cautiously stretch my hand forward. “Come on.”

She lingers on me, considering it.

But fear propels when she glances down at Kayla again.

Kayla whimpers as Annalise presses the knife into her flesh. Thankfully, it doesn’t draw blood.

“You betrayed me, Brandon.” Her tone is spiteful. “There are consequences for hurting me, remember?”

Oh, I remember well, you fucking bitch.

Thanks especially to the scars I have to live with for the rest of my life.

“Anna.” I move a few more steps until I’m inches from Kayla. Lifting my hand, I touch the face of the sicko that destroyed me at thirteen.

“I’m so sorry I hurt you. It didn’t mean anything. Come with me.”

Bile burns my throat when Annalise leans into my hand and purrs like a fucking cat. “Brandon.”

Losing focus, she moves the knife from Kayla’s throat. Adrenaline surges on high voltage.

I go for it.

“Fuck you!” I push Kayla from between us and grab Annalise’s wrist to wrestle the knife from her hand.

She drops the flashlight. It rolls around, causing flickers of blue. Her frustrated shrieks echo in the tower. The faint light in the old window is all I have.

“No!” Annalise screams. “You lied to me! You don’t love me! You still won’t love me!”

“Damn right, you fucking psycho! I love Kayla!” It’s a struggle to retrieve the knife. Why is this crazy bitch so strong?

“Ugh!” She writhes her other hand free and slaps at my face. I wince from her nails, losing focus.

Annalise pries away the hand gripping the knife and slices my stomach.

I stumble back from the pain.

Kayla’s muffled cries draw Annalise’s focus.

“She won’t have you, Brandon!” she screams, charging toward Kayla with the knife raised. “I won’t let her!”

“Kayla!” Indescribable force jolts me from the ground fast. I shove Annalise with brute strength.

Her body flies backward.

The window shatters.

Her guttural screams fill the night. I hear the loud thud when she hits the ground.

My shoulders slump. My chest feels heavy. “Oh…God…” Did I kill her?

“Mmm,” Kayla’s muffled sobs pull me out of it.

Dropping down beside her, I quickly remove the gag from her mouth.
