“Are you okay?” I question, frantic.

“Yes,” she says between gasps. “Are you?”

“Yeah,” I rasp, though my body is shaking.

I may have killed Annalise.

The second I untie her wrists, Kayla throws her arms around my neck, sobbing against my skin. “Brandon…”

I cling to her body. “I’m so sorry, baby. So sorry.”

“She won’t hurt you again.” Her voice hitches.

Easing her back, I nod and tell her, “She doesn’t hurt me anymore.”

Kayla grabs the flashlight and shines it on me, looking at my hoodie. Faint blood seeps through the fabric.

“Is it deep?” she asks.

“It’s not too bad. Come on. Let’s get out of here.”

Holding each other tightly, we descend the stone steps and exit the tower.

Kayla releases a chilling gasp at Annalise’s dark frame on the ground. She’s not moving.

Urgent voices and bright lights approach.

Soon, the police emerge among the trees.

“Brandon Decker and Kayla McNeil?” one of them confirm.

“Yes,” I mutter, my body still shaking.

“Where’s Annalise Dorough?” another asks.

I motion behind us as I tell them, “Back there. I’m not sure if she’s…”

They shine their lights past us, allowing us to see her better. Her eyes are wide open, blood spewing from her mouth and head.

I grimace from the haunting sight.

“Uhh..” Kayla pivots and draws even closer to me.

An officer leads us from the area. When we’re in the open, paramedics hurry over with both our families.

“Brandon!” Britney sputters amid sobs, chucking into me.

I don’t flinch.

I embrace my twin in return. It’s been so long.

Mom and Dad stay close, eyes glossy.

Kayla’s parents wrap their arms around her and draw her away with a medic, while another eases my sister back to look at my stomach.

Dad pats my shoulder and sniffs. “I’m so glad you’re all right. Both of you.”

“Yes…” Mom looks guilty as ever, wringing her fingers. “Where is she?”
