He’s just as cool outside of his uniform. Though the weather is warm, he’s in relaxed blue jeans and a gray shirt with long sleeves.

Only heaven knows why my fingers are twitching to run through his tousled ash-blonde hair. Or why I’m thinking about how impeccable he must smell.

Everyone’s watching him with surprise plastered on their faces.

“Brandon Decker is at a party,” Sam utters in astonishment.

I challenged him, I think to myself. That must be why.

Brandon glimpses me, and a naughty sensation sweeps across my skin and between my thighs when he starts over. Kids part like the red sea, afraid to touch him.

Acting tough, I straighten my shoulders and raise my chin.

He comes to a stop a few inches away, keeping his distance. Gawd! As expected, that cologne is intoxicating. His gaze is so fricking intense!

“You came,” I sputter, trying to sound unaffected but failing.

Brandon’s impassive guise persists as he says, “You’re blocking me.”

My stomach plunges. “What?”

“Um, Kayla.” Sam loops her arm around mine and eases me aside for him to step up to the island.

Brandon scans the options and decides on soda, treading away without a peep afterward.

I watch as he steps outside to the yard, falling into conversation with his friends. They look just as amazed by his arrival.

Why do I feel hurt?

Of course, he didn’t come to the party for me.

What the hell is wrong with me?

Brandon Decker is arrogant, acknowledges me when he feels like it, but otherwise acts as if I don’t exist.

Forget about him, Kayla.

“How did Eric convince his friend to come to a party?” Sam wonders aloud.

“Who knows.” I push it aside while twisting to her. “Going to talk to Rajid?”

She expels a deep breath, considers for a moment, then nods. “Yes. Coming?”

“Sure.” I grab a can of seltzer water before we head to the backyard.

It’s a struggle to avoid glancing in Brandon’s direction. He’s an enticing flame, and I’m a silly moth drawn to him.

Rajid glimpses us and steps away from the conversation.

“Here’s your chance,” I whisper to Sam, veering off to allow them privacy. I cross the yard to the pool, surprised no one is swimming.

Stopping a few feet from the edge, I drink while staring at the blue-lit water.

“Dammit,” I scold myself, unable to rid my mind of Brandon. Why can’t I stop thinking about him?

“Hey.”

I turn at the familiar voice.
