Heath approaches with a broad grin on his face. “Kayla, right? We have Stats.”

“Yeah.”

He moistens his lips before adding, “Thanks for coming to my party.”

“My friends thought it was a good idea. Sorry I didn’t say hello or anything.”

“Nah, it’s cool.” He watches me over the cup as he drinks. “So, it must be tough at a new school for your senior year.”

“I’m adapting fast.”

“That’s good. You, uh, want anything else to drink?”

I motion to the seltzer water as I reply, “I’m all set. Thanks.”

Heath pauses a beat, and asks, “What do you do for fun in West Heights?” He seems like a nice guy.

“Um, it depends on what you’re into,” I respond.

That results in another smile. “Cool. Maybe you could show me around sometime.”

I shrug and tell him, “Maybe.”

He gestures to the chairs. We sit and fall into conversation about Charleston and Lacrosse, which he plays.

Would I accept if he asks me out?

Nope.

The gnawing desire inside would refuse because these emotions are lusting for a brooding, infuriating guy. That’s why my gaze is incessantly wandering past Heath’s head to Brandon.

He seems anxious, shifting in place and drinking with disinterest, while Eric and Steve laugh it up.

Jealousy pricks me as a girl risks approaching Brandon. But it simmers when he grunts at her before she even attempts a convo.

Twisting, he throws a chilling glance in my direction.

My heart leaps like a frog moving from one waterlily to the next.

His gaze is audacious, flashing an indiscernible command. Then he strides from the yard, going into the house. Perhaps that’s as much as he can handle at a party.

“Coming to the next game?” Heath’s voice drifts back in. I’ve missed some of what he’s said.

“Uh, maybe.” I start to rise from the chair. “Where’s the bathroom?”

“In the hallway,” he replies.

I head across the yard. Rajid and Sam are talking, but they’re in a group.

Entering the house, I find the guest bathroom in the passage and arch over the sink to scold my reflection the instant I shut the door. “Stop letting him creep under your skin.”

On my way out minutes later, I hear voices coming from a room. Heath’s deep tone is recognizable.

“So, what’s up with the new girl?” another guy questions.

Heath chuckles in a dirty way. “I’ve never tried black pussy. I’m curious. How much you want to bet I’ll get her upstairs tonight?”

I grimace at their disgusting remarks.
